Although Luka Doncic’s 52-point outburst, supported by Austin Reaves‘ 29-point contribution, was the main talking point from the game, it is difficult to overlook Walker Kessler‘s performance.Sunday’s game against the Utah Jazz marked Walker Kessler’s first game back in Utah after being traded in the offseason. Having spent the first four years of his career with the Jazz, making a name for himself as one of the league’s most promising young centers, Utah holds a special place in the big man’s heart. Unfortunately, that may have had a negative effect on him.Walker Kessler ended his homecoming performance with two points, seven rebounds, and one block, easily ranking as his weakest performance in a Lakers uniform. While speaking about his poor display with the media after the game, Kessler readily admitted that returning to Utah may have played a part in this, as he shared:“I think, you know, going into the game, I definitely let my emotions get the best of me. But you know, you’ve got to learn from those moments and move on. But yeah, I’m just glad we got the win tonight. Yeah, I’ve got a lot of thanks to give to my teammates. I mean, all of them played their roles and did a great job even if it wasn’t my best night. So, I really, really appreciate them.”Despite Walker Kessler’s shortcomings, the Lakers managed to hold their own against the Jazz. While Doncic and Reaves shouldered a majority of the burden to compensate for Kessler’s relative inactivity, players like Collin Sexton (13 PTS, 5-11 FG), Matisse Thybulle (11 PTS, 3 STL, 4-8 FG), and Ziaire Williams (11 PTS, 3-7 3PT) also played vital roles in picking up the slack. In many ways, this is an incredibly promising sign for the Lakers, as it showcases the team’s versatility and depth. But should this be a point of concern regarding Kessler moving forward? For the most part, it shouldn’t. The team is only three games into the season, and in light of his first two outings, which were defined by phenomenal defensive influence and efficient scoring in the post, Sunday night’s performance can be viewed as an outlier for Kessler. One of the more concerning factors about the big man’s performance was the number of shots he attempted. Having shot 1-2 from the field, Kessler looked tentative. While this could also be attributed to the limited opportunities he had to score, a hesitation to shoot should be addressed and culled as soon as possible. It goes without saying that Walker Kessler is a key player in the Lakers’ rotation. Although he serves as the team’s defensive anchor, he plays an equally vital role as a lob threat on the offensive end. Hence, getting him involved is essential to L.A.’s winning effort.Even if the team secured victory on Sunday despite Kessler’s limited involvement, the Purple and Gold would do well not to make this a habit. With an upcoming matchup against the Portland Trail Blazers at home on Tuesday, Oct. 27, the Lakers will hope to see Walker Kessler return to familiar form.
