The defending champions know their potential path as they aim for a repeat Colorado Class 2A football state title.CHSAA released the 2A football playoff seeds and brackets Oct. 25 and Wellington is No. 3 in a newly-expanded 2A field.The Eagles have a first-round bye and will open the 2A playoffs on Nov. 6/7 to begin their postseason path toward possible back-to-back championships.This is the first season Colorado's 2A playoffs have 24 teams, a change from the 16-team, no-bye format that moves Classes 3A/2A in line with the 5A/4A brackets.Wellington finished the regular season with an 8-1 overall record and six straight blowout wins to claim the Patriot League title. The Eagles beat similarly-ranked teams like No. 13 University (55-22) and No. 18 Resurrection Christian (44-0) by large margins during the regular season.This is a guaranteed home game for Wellington.Colorado 2A football quarterfinals (Nov. 13-14)Matchup: Possible matchups include No. 6 La Junta (8-1), No. 11 Basalt (6-3) and No. 22 Florence (3-6)With a second-round win, Wellington would also meet another first-time opponent in the quarterfinals. If La Junta is the matchup, it would be a home game for the third seed.Wellington would only travel for the quarterfinals if Florence pulls two straight upsets. Otherwise, the Eagles will be at home this round.2A football semifinals: Rubber match vs. TCA? (Nov. 20-21)Matchup: Highest seeds include No. 2 The Classical Academy (8-1), No. 7 Brush (6-3) and No. 10 Lamar (6-3)The obvious storyline here would be a third straight postseason matchup vs. TCA. The teams met in the 2024 2A title game, with the Titans winning after a controversial no-fumble call in the final minute. The Eagles got their revenge in a smothering semifinal home win last year en route to a dominant unbeaten 2A title.Could we get a rubber match for a spot in the 2A finals? TCA would host as the higher seed.Wellington played Brush this season and crushed the Beetdiggers 56-19 at home on Sept. 25. A rematch would also be at home. The Eagles have never faced Lamar.Abshire: Watch out, Colorado. Wellington is 2A title favorite — againCould there be a Colorado 2A title rematch? (Nov. 28)Matchup: Highest seeds include No. 1 Elizabeth (9-0), No. 4 Delta (9-0), No. 5 Eaton (7-2), No. 8 Alamosa (6-3) and No. 9 Forge Christian (6-3)If No. 1 faces No. 3 for the 2A title, it would be a rematch of last year's 35-0 championship game that capped Wellington's unbeaten season. Elizabeth allowed just 5.8 points per game and beat eight 2A playoff teams in a perfect regular season, including an Oct. 23 home win (27-17) over No. 2 TCA.Wellington defeated Delta in the 2024 playoffs and beat Alamosa in the 2025 postseason. The Eagles are 4-0 in the last three years vs. Eaton, including a 35-7 road win on Oct. 2. Wellington has never played Forge Christian.The Colorado Class 2A state championship game is scheduled for 5 p.m. Nov. 28 at CSU Pueblo's ThunderBowl.
