One week remains in the 2026 National Women’s Soccer League season and the Shield, one more spot in the playoffs and quarterfinal hosting privileges are all still at stake heading into Decision Day next Sunday. It is the perfect time for eight simultaneous games across ESPN properties at 5 p.m. ET on Nov. 1 because most of the U.S. will also get an extra hour of sleep. While the Portland Thorns’ 1-0 victory over the North Carolina Courage on Friday helped clinch not only their own playoff berth but also three others, there’s still plenty up in the air for the final day of the regular season. With one of the league’s key trophies on the line, the permutations once again prove why the NWSL was right to resurrect Decision Day to maximize drama.Shield race down to twoThe contenders for highest point total of the regular season were narrowed to two teams on Sunday. More than just a trophy, the NWSL awards bonus money to players on the NWSL Shield-winning team, with each receiving $15,000 (the same amount awarded to the players who win the Championship).Gotham FC got the job done on the road in Orlando despite some brief torrential rain and Marta’s best efforts, earning a 2-1 win. However, they needed two other results to clinch the Shield a week early. While Washington Spirit’s 2-1 loss to Kansas City worked in their favor, the San Diego Wave would not be denied at home against the Boston Legacy.San Diego needed a single point to stay alive in the race, and it is exactly what they got after a dramatic back-and-forth with the Legacy. After conceding first, the Wave answered right back with two of their own, with midfielder Gia Corley scoring and forward Trinity Byars forcing a Boston own goal. Midfielder Alba Caño equalized for Boston with an absolute golazo, and the Wave had to settle for the 2-2 draw. The Spirit were in the Shield race Sunday morning, but by the afternoon they watched any chance soar over the net, just like their shots. They struck first at CPKC Stadium, but more defensive miscues meant a quick equalizer and then an immediate go-ahead goal for the Current. Despite the early goal-scoring flurry, those would be the only three goals of the evening.Gotham has the edge heading into Decision Day and remains in control of the Shield race with 58 points, three ahead of San Diego with 55.For Gotham FC, the 2026 season is a strange inversion of their two previous championship-winning seasons in 2023 and 2025. Both times Gotham FC lifted the final trophy of the season, they entered the playoffs in the last playoff spot (sixth in 2023, eighth in 2025). But their quest to finally win the regular season trophy has been challenging in the back half of the season due to a number of transfers and injuries ravaging their starting lineup and depth. Notably, defenders Emily Sonnett and Bruninha are both on the season-ending injury list, as is rookie of the year contender Jordynn Dudley.Gotham FC was also without Rose Lavelle on Sunday (cited as a neck injury on the injury report) and Jaedyn Shaw (knee). Head coach Juan Carlos Amoros did not indicate any further information about their return.“We love to have the destiny in our own hands,” Gotham forward Midge Purce, who scored for Gotham on Sunday, said. “We also love to make it difficult and exciting for all of you guys. We got one more to go for that. So we’re pumped.”Who will be the final team to snag a quarterfinal at home?Mathematically, thanks to the Current-Spirit result, only Gotham and San Diego are heading into Decision Day having clinched home quarterfinal games. The Spirit are on steadier ground, but cannot stumble on Decision Day with the Current and Angel City close enough in the standings to take their spot. The Spirit have 52 points with a +13 goal differential, the Current have 50 points with a +13 goal differential and Angel City is right behind with 49 points and a +19 goal differential. If the Spirit lose, the Current and Angel City could take full advantage and both nab home quarterfinals. The Utah Royals had maintained a top four spot for a decent portion of the season, but now have only an outside chance of hosting a quarterfinal at home if all three teams above them lose.Who’s sneaking into the playoffs on the final day?The Seattle Reign drew 0-0 against Utah on the road on Friday. That single point meant they would need another week to seal the final playoff spot. The Reign control their own destiny with 44 points, two ahead of the Courage and three ahead of the Denver Summit. The Reign will get home advantage on Decision Day, hosting the Orlando Pride. In a fun twist for the eighth-seed race, North Carolina will host Denver at the same time. If the Reign win, they’re in. If the Reign draw, they open the door for the Courage if they defeat Denver. If the Reign lose and there is a winner in the Courage-Summit match, then that team will meet the No. 1 seed in the quarterfinals.Denver would advance thanks to its goal differential, which it padded extensively this weekend with a 6-1 win against Racing Louisville. Denver is sitting at a +12 goal differential, whereas the Reign are only at +3.Bring on Decision DayEight games kick off on Sunday, Nov. 1, at 5 p.m. and will be broadcast across ESPN platforms, with the final assignments still to be announced. For the Shield race: Gotham FC host Utah Royals FCSan Diego Wave at Bay FCGotham will clinch the Shield with a win or a draw against Utah. San Diego needs a Utah win and a victory of its own against Bay FC to steal the Shield on the final day.For playoff hosting stakes: Washington Spirit host Chicago StarsKC Current at Racing LouisvilleAngel City host (in Carson, Calif., at Dignity Health Sports Park) the Boston LegacyUtah Royals at Gotham FCFor the final playoff spot: Seattle Reign host Orlando PrideNorth Carolina Courage host Denver SummitAnd Ashley Sanchez still looks to break the single-season scoring record in the final game of the year. The only game without one of those stakes — but that will still determine quarterfinal matchup pairings — is the Thorns at Houston Dash. Portland has lost the tiebreak based on total wins against Utah, but could still move up the table if Utah and/or Angel City lose on Sunday.Every single match of Decision Day has meaningful stakes for the ten remaining teams still in playoff contention. The Athletic will be helping you make sense of what is guaranteed to be a chaotic two hours (plus stoppage time) next Sunday. This article originally appeared in The Athletic.Portland Thorns, Chicago Red Stars, Houston Dash, North Carolina Courage, Seattle Reign, Orlando Pride, Gotham FC, Kansas City Current, Washington Spirit, Angel City, Racing Louisville FC, San Diego Wave, Utah Royals FC, Bay FC, Denver Summit FC, Boston Legacy FC, NWSL, Women's Soccer2026 The Athletic Media Company
