Kyle Larson Admits His Wild Talladega Win Made Absolutely No Sense

Kyle Larson had plenty of reasons to believe Sunday wasn’t going to be his day.He got shuffled out of the lead on the final lap at Talladega Superspeedway, watched his shot at victory seemingly disappear and somehow ended up celebrating in Victory Lane minutes later.Then came another surprise: the championship standings.By the time Larson finished processing everything that happened in the YellaWood 500, he had his first NASCAR Cup Series superspeedway victory and a 73-point advantage with two races remaining.Even he couldn’t quite explain his good fortune.Kyle Larson Thought His Talladega Victory Was GoneLarson took the white flag in the lead, exactly where he wanted to be. But superspeedway racing rarely rewards anyone for getting comfortable.Coming off Turn 2, the No. 5 Chevrolet lost momentum and was shuffled backward as the field surged past. Larson suddenly found himself outside the top 10, with barely half a lap remaining.“I think we just got a little loose off of 2,” crew chief Cliff Daniels explained afterward from the Talladega media center. “I think the 33 was trying to push us, in our lane forward.”Daniels admitted he wasn’t sure how much ground Larson could recover.Then the race took another unexpected turn.Ross Chastain got behind Larson and helped rebuild his momentum. As the cars ahead scattered across the track, Larson found an opening and charged back toward the front.“Definitely did not think I would win. Even off of Turn 4 I did not think I would win,” Larson admitted. “But that’s just superspeedway racing.”Daniels had an equally fitting description.“When the seas parted, we were there.”Larson ultimately beat Hendrick Motorsports teammate William Byron to the finish line by 0.041 seconds.Larson’s Biggest Surprise Came After the Checkered FlagWinning at Talladega was remarkable enough. What Larson discovered afterward might have been even harder to believe.He entered Sunday with a five-point lead over Christopher Bell. By the end of the afternoon, that advantage had grown to 73 points over Denny Hamlin.“Never in a million years would I imagine leaving here plus 73,” Larson said. “I was shocked when I saw that on the screen.”“That makes the win feel even cooler.”The circumstances made the turnaround particularly striking. Just one week earlier, Larson had endured a miserable 34th-place finish at Phoenix, prompting Daniels to take responsibility for the team’s setup.Now the No. 5 team had survived Talladega, won the race and emerged with its strongest championship position of the Chase.Still, Larson wasn’t about to declare the title race over.“There’s still two races. It’s so easy to look at it and be like, ‘Oh, the 5’s got it,'” he cautioned.“There’s still a lot of racing left.”That’s the strange beauty of Larson’s Sunday.
