The star defenseman is a free agent in July of 2027. He has not signed a new contract with Minnesota, either. Minnesota was comfortable with his contract status at the time of their trade with the Canucks to land Hughes last December.Hughes had decided not to sign long-term with the Canucks prior to last year’s trade. He had spent his entire career with Vancouver prior to that decision. He helped Vancouver make the playoffs a few times. Most notably, they were a game away from the Western Conference Finals in 2024.At this time, the Wild remain confident they can get some sort of deal done. However, time is certainly ticking. They need to get something done sooner or later to avoid losing him for nothing. Canucks fans made sure Minnesota and its fans didn’t forget that it isn’t all sunshine and rainbows, even with Hughes currently on the team.Related: Wild’s Quinn Hughes sends heartfelt message before Vancouver returnRelated: Cam York landing spots after being named Flyers trade candidate
