As the league works to resolve the scheduling issue, questions are mounting over how the conflict was allowed to arise during the championship series.Game 6 was initially expected to take place at State Farm Arena, where the Dream have played all their playoff games this season. However, the Atlanta Hawks are scheduled to host the Cleveland Cavaliers at the same venue on Thursday, October 29, creating a scheduling clash that the WNBA and NBA have yet to resolve. This recurring problem with Dream home games prompted WNBA broadcaster Emily Austin to drop a blunt comment on X.“The Atlanta Dream made the WNBA Finals and DON’T EVEN HAVE AN ARENA TO HOST THEM. The WNBA wants to be treated like a major sports league but can’t even organize its own championship. Beyond embarrassing. Absolute incompetence.”It is rather concerning that, despite being one of the fastest-growing leagues in the American sports landscape, the WNBA has been unable to resolve the Dream’s stadium troubles. The team was ranked 14th out of the 15 WNBA teams by NBC Sports earlier this year in terms of valuation at $330 million, above only the Toronto Tempo. This might explain why, despite a dire need for a larger home stadium, the Dream are not working on building one.The WNBA Finals deserve clarity, not confusion. That would mean three days between each of Games 5/6 and 6/7. The WNBA would support that proposal, but only if both teams agree to it, sources said.”This is not the first time the Hawks have had to adjust their schedule to accommodate the Dream’s games. Game 3 of the Dream-Valkyries finals series had to be moved up a day to avoid any clashes. Game 4, on October 24, then became a doubleheader at State Farm, as the tip-off for the Hawks-Houston Rockets had to be pushed back. The problem arose because of the Atlanta Dream’s current home arena, Gateway Center. The arena in Atlanta is the smallest home arena of any WNBA team, with a capacity of only 3,500. Hosting an event as big as the WNBA Finals with this seating capacity was not feasible given the large number of fans expected to attend. So all of the Dream’s postseason games were moved to the Hawks’ stadium, State Farm Arena, which has a capacity of over 17,600. The Dream’s majority owner, Larry Gottesdiener, opened up about the move.“This is what the players and the fans deserve,” Gottesdiener said in a statement. “We are grateful to all of the stakeholders who worked together to resolve the conflicts and make this happen.”WNBA journalist Natalie Esquire also took to X to shed more light on the current situation in response to Philippou’s post.“More time off between games isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially when key players are banged up. I see Valks fans asking why GS would do this, they may not, but w/Lacob going on record saying it’s a bad look for ATL to play at Gateway in the Finals, he’s sorta set a precedent.”Golden State Valkyries’ governor Joe Lacob has in the recent past said that he is against the Atlanta Dream playing their home games at Gateway Center, as the Valkyries would be hosting at Chase Center, often called Ballhalla for its roaring crowds.“The look would not be too good to have Ballhalla and 18,000 fans here and 3,500 over there.”There is still significant uncertainty about when and where Game 6 between the Valkyries and the Dream will be held, with one team or the other forced to make adjustments. The latest update comes from Philippou once again, reposted by Underdog WNBA.“We are waiting to hear from the league if any changes can be made to allow us to play in State Farm Arena. If not, the game will be played in Gateway Center Arena.”While we wait for that update, fans can look forward to Game 5, as both teams return to Chase Center to see if the Valkyries can use the momentum from their 67-62 win on Saturday to make the series score 3-2 going into the uncertain Game 6.Trending ArticlesACC Program Fires Head Coach After 14-Year Tenure, Names Special Teams Coordinator Interim HCRaiders Mourn Loss of Franchise Legend Who Passed Away at 82NFL Under Fire After Punishing Caleb Williams as Bears QB Tries to Protect Himself From InjuryNFL Punishes Chiefs Duo Over Controversial Incidents Against Justin Herbert & Chargers’ OffenseCollege Football Rankings: Big Shake Ups For Texas, Tennessee, Ole Miss; New No.2 & MoreThe post “Beyond Embarrassing”: WNBA Media Members Share Reactions After Atlanta Dream Address Uncertainty Around Finals Game 6 Time & Venue appeared first on EssentiallySports.
