Atlanta Braves Could Trade for Underrated Royals Pitcher in MLB Offseason

The Atlanta Braves won the National League East at 94-68 in 2026 and did it while losing three starting pitchers to season-ending injuries. Spencer Strider went down in June with elbow inflammation. Spencer Schwellenbach had bone spur surgery and never returned. Joey Wentz tore his ACL in spring training. If Atlanta wants to make another deep run in 2027, adding rotation depth this offseason is not optional. It is a necessity.Kansas City Royals right-hander Michael Wacha is the kind of arm that makes sense for a contender shopping in that market.Wacha went 9-10 with a 3.32 ERA across 32 starts and 200 2/3 innings for Kansas City in 2026. He posted a 1.11 WHIP and struck out 158 batters while earning an AL All-Star selection. His 200 2/3 innings were his highest single-season total since 2015. At 35 years old, in his 14th major-league season, Wacha quietly put together one of the better starter seasons in the American League.The Braves leaned heavily on Chris Sale, Bryce Elder and Martin Perez after their rotation collapsed. They also leaned on Tyler Mahle after he was acquired from the San Francisco Giants at the trade deadline. Mahle is set to hit unrestricted free agency.Sale was excellent, finishing at 2.16 ERA across 27 starts. Perez provided nine wins and a 3.04 ERA. But Atlanta cannot count on that group carrying the same load in 2027, particularly with Strider's elbow status still uncertain heading into the offseason.Wacha fills a specific need. He does not require a long-term commitment and he has proven he can handle a full workload. His contract is worth $14 million in 2027, the final guaranteed year of his three-year deal. Wacha also has a $14 million club option for 2028.Kansas City finished 69-93 and last in the AL Central. The Royals could be sellers this offseason. Their rotation also took hits in 2026, with Cole Ragans, Ryan Bergert and Stephen Kolek all missing time with arm injuries, which means the front office has reason to keep Wacha around heading into a rebuild.That means Atlanta would need to move a few valuable prospects to get a trade done. The Braves have a farm system capable of putting together an attractive package, and their window is open right now. Wacha is not an ace, but he does not need to be. Atlanta needs innings from a reliable arm. Wacha delivered exactly that in 2026 and he likely will do it again in 2027.
