The Sheffield United Dilemma Chris Wilder Surely Can’t IgnoreWhen Romelle Donovan arrived at Sheffield United on loan from Brentford during the summer transfer window, there was genuine excitement surrounding the 19-year-old winger. The young Englishman had shown enough promise to suggest that he could become an exciting addition to Chris Wilder’s squad, but he also arrived with a considerable challenge ahead of him.Donovan was tasked with filling the void left by boyhood Blade Andre Brooks, who departed Bramall Lane to join Norwich City. Replacing a homegrown talent who had developed a connection with the supporters was never going to be straightforward, but the Brentford youngster appeared to possess the attributes to make his own mark in S2.His pre-season performances offered plenty of encouragement, and he showed further glimpses of his potential during the opening weeks of the campaign. Yet, as the season has progressed, Donovan has found himself spending far more time watching from the sidelines than making a meaningful contribution on the pitch. And that is becoming increasingly difficult for Sheffield United supporters to understand.Only Wilder knows precisely why the teenager has been overlooked so frequently, but the decision to leave him out of the starting eleven has become a frustrating talking point among the Blades faithful. With United struggling to find consistency and a reliable attacking threat, the continued absence of a player who appears capable of injecting some much-needed energy into the side is raising legitimate questions.Donovan Offers Something Sheffield United Are Desperately MissingSHEFFIELD, ENGLAND – OCTOBER 24: Romelle Donovan of Sheffield United runs with the ball during the Sky Bet Championship 2026/27 match between Sheffield United and Derby County at Bramall Lane on October 24, 2026 in Sheffield, England. (Photo by George Wood/Getty Images)There is a reason why Donovan’s appearances, however brief, have generated excitement among the supporters. He plays with an aggression, directness and willingness to take defenders on that can sometimes be missing from United’s attacking play.Rather than constantly looking to recycle possession or take the safe option, Donovan wants to make things happen. He is comfortable running at his opponent, using his pace and close control to create separation, and attempting to deliver something dangerous in the final third. His willingness to attack defenders is particularly valuable for a Sheffield United side that has struggled to consistently turn possession into meaningful opportunities. A winger who can beat his man, win fouls and deliver quality crosses offers an alternative route to goal, especially when opponents are defending in a compact shape.More importantly, Donovan appears to bring an element of unpredictability. Defenders cannot always anticipate whether he will drive towards the byline, cut inside or attempt to create an opening through individual skill, similar to the ways Iliman Ndiaye used to.That is precisely the sort of attacking threat United should be looking to encourage, particularly when other options have struggled to produce consistently. There is also an undeniable connection between Donovan’s cameos and the atmosphere inside Bramall Lane. When he comes off the bench, supporters appear to recognise that something different might happen. He gets people out of their seats because he is prepared to take risks and attempt things that can change the momentum of a game. That does not mean every run will lead to a goal or every cross will find a teammate. At 19, inconsistency and mistakes are inevitable, but with more time on the pitch, those wrinkles will continue to get ironed out.The StatisticsThe most interesting aspect of Donovan’s limited involvement is how his per-90-minute statistics compare with those of Ben Brereton Diaz, who has struggled to make a consistent impact for the Blades. The difference in successful dribbles is particularly noticeable. Donovan averages three successful dribbles per 90 minutes, compared with just 0.8 for Brereton Diaz. That is a substantial gap and highlights the teenager’s willingness and ability to take defenders on directly. For a Sheffield United side that can sometimes lack penetration in the final third, this is an important quality. Beating an opponent can force defenders out of position, create space for overlapping full-backs and open up passing lanes that would otherwise remain unavailable.Donovan also averages 1.36 successful crosses per 90 minutes, more than double Brereton Diaz’s 0.54. With Patrick Bamford and other attacking players looking for service into the penalty area, as we saw with Donovan’s assist for Bamford against Derby County, having a winger capable of consistently getting into crossing positions could prove valuable. The figures for big chances created are equally revealing. Donovan averages 0.45 per 90 minutes, compared with Brereton Diaz’s 0.14. Although the teenager’s limited playing time means these figures should be treated cautiously, they suggest he has been more productive when it comes to creating high-quality opportunities. His shooting numbers also make for encouraging reading. Donovan averages 1.60 shots per 90 minutes, with 0.90 hitting the target. Brereton Diaz, meanwhile, records 1.08 shots and 0.41 shots on target per 90 minutes. These numbers do not automatically make Donovan the better player. Nevertheless, they provide evidence to support the eye test that the youngster has been offering a more threatening attacking presence in the minutes available to him.Wilder has experimented with using Brereton Diaz as an inverted winger and as a more traditional wide player, allowing him to move inside or attempt to deliver crosses with his stronger foot. Yet, regardless of the system, the Chile international has struggled to impose himself on matches. That is the fundamental issue. United need more from Brereton Diaz, particularly in the final third, where his involvement has too often failed to translate into meaningful attacking contributions.Donovan, by contrast, looks more like a natural wide attacking option who wants to stretch the opposition, attack space and engage defenders in one-vs-one situations. His direct running can give United a different dimension, while his willingness to track back and compete defensively suggests that his contribution is not just limited to attacking play. Donovan averages 8.6 duels won per 90 minutes, compared with Brereton Diaz’s 4.32. He also records 3.6 tackles and seven ball recoveries per 90 minutes, against 1.49 tackles and 3.65 recoveries for the Chilean.Wilder Must Give the Youngster A Genuine OpportunityBRISTOL, ENGLAND – OCTOBER 17: Chris Wilder, Manager of Sheffield United celebrates after the final whistle during the Sky Bet Championship 2026/27 match between Bristol City and Sheffield United at Ashton Gate on October 17, 2026 in Bristol, England. (Photo by Dan Mullan/Getty Images)There will undoubtedly be reasons behind Wilder’s reluctance to start Donovan regularly. The teenager is still developing, adapting to senior football and learning what is required to perform consistently at Championship level. But when a team is struggling to find a reliable attacking formula, it makes little sense to repeatedly overlook a player who has demonstrated the ability to excite supporters and offer something different. Donovan might not be the finished article, but neither are the alternatives necessarily providing the answers Wilder is searching for.Chong has shown flashes of quality but remains frustratingly inconsistent with his end product. Brereton Diaz has struggled to influence games. Meanwhile, Donovan has been left to make do with limited opportunities from the bench, often entering matches when there is precious little time to change the outcome. The youngster cannot build rhythm or develop an understanding with his teammates without regular minutes, yet he appears to need to do more in those brief cameos to convince his manager that he deserves a starting place. The answer to this dilemma should be pretty straightforward at this point: give him a run in the starting eleven and see the impact he gives Sheffield United from minute one at 0-0, rather than giving him the last 15 minutes when the Blades are chasing the game.Stats taken from Fotmob.
