Savannah Bananas will try to fill Houston's Reliant Stadium with pair of wild games in 2027

Savannah Banana players entertain the crowd before their baseball game against the Texas Tailgaters and the Savannah Bananas at Globe Life Field, Sunday Sept. 27, 2026, in Arlington (Bob Booth/The Dallas Morning News) The Savannah Bananas easily sold out the Sugar Land Space Cowboys' Constellation Field when they came to the area for the first time in 2023. They didn't have any problem packing in more than 40,000 to the Houston Astros' downtown ballpark in 2024 and 2025. So, can they fill Reliant Stadium, which will be hosting the first baseball game in its 25-year history? They'll try it out when the Bananas take over the home of the Houston Texans and the rodeo for a weekend with games on May 22-23. Considering the Bananas set a team attendance record with 102,000 fans at Texas A&M's Kyle Field earlier this year, filling Reliant Stadium, even on consecutive nights, shouldn't be an issue. The Bananas, who are a little bit like the Harlem Globetrotters of baseball, only with more flair, played in front of more than 2 million fans in 2025 and went over 3 million this year, including that six-figure crowd in College Station. The team that features players on stilts, choreographed dance routines and backflipping outfielders who make catches midflip, likely will top that in 2027 considering some of the venues on the schedule it released Thursday. The Bananas will play in 23 Major League Baseball stadiums, including the Texas Rangers' Globe Life Field, and 10 football stadiums, including Houston's Reliant Stadium, San Antonio's Alamodome and Baylor's McLane Stadium. Other landmark stops on the schedule include Notre Dame, Yankee Stadium, Chicago's Solder Field, Iowa's Field of Dreams and Cooperstown, New York. For the first time, the team will go international with games south of the border in Monterrey and Tijuana and north of the border in Winnipeg and Toronto. The Bananas brand of baseball also will return to Sugar Land with the Texas Tailgaters playing the Loco Beach Coconuts - a pair of teams in what is called the Banana Ball Championship League - on March 12-13 at Constellation Field. To get tickets to any of the games, fans must enter a ticket lottery at the team's website. The lottery is open now through Oct. 31. Joining the list does not guarantee the opportunity to buy tickets, but fans who are selected will receive an email with further instructions.SubscribeThere’s more to Houston with the Chronicle.
