Rams should consider these kickers to upgrade over Harrison Mevis

ATLANTA, GEORGIA- AUGUST 15: Lenny Krieg #46 of the Atlanta Falcons warms up prior to a NFL Preseason 2025 game against the Tennessee Titans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on August 15, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Logan Bowles/Getty Images) | Getty Images With two missed field goal attempts on Monday Night Football against the Buffalo Bills, Harrison Mevis potentially just played his final game with the Los Angeles Rams.Sean McVay said in his post-game press conference that he would “evaluate everything” in regards to the team’s kicking operation. So let’s do that part for him. If the Rams move on from Mevis, what available alternatives exist?Currently on a practice squadThe Rams would need to open a space on the 53-man roster in order to poach a player from a practice squad. Street free agents have an advantage because they can move to LA’s practice squad during a trial phase. The NFL allows two practice squad players to be activated on a weekly basis. Each individual player can be elevated for a maximum of three times per season before they must be signed to the 53-man roster.Lenny Kreig, Green Bay PackersKreig likely doesn’t make sense for the Rams because Green Bay is keeping him as an additional player under the international player developmental exemption. He was born in Berlin, Germany and is transitioning to American football from the sport of soccer. Kreig is 24 years old.Kansei Matsuzawa, Las Vegas RaidersNicknamed “The Tokyo Toe”, Matsuzawa is also on the Raiders practice squad under an exemption through the International Player Pathway (IPP) program. He’s 27 years old.Matsuzawa played college football at Hawaii. He converted 27 and 29 field goals over the 2025 season and tied an FBS record with 25 consecutive makes to start the season. Similar to Mevis, range is an open question. Matsuzawa’s longest make is from just 52 yards.Charlie Smyth, New Orleans SaintsSmyth is also an international player from Northern Ireland, although he boasts the most NFL experience of this group so far. He played the final six games of the 2025 regular season for the Saints and made 12 of 16 field goal attempts with a long of 57. Smyth was perfect on all 13 of his extra point tries. If the Rams are looking for a kicker with more range, Smyth might be their guy. He was 4/6 for New Orleans last year. He made all five of his attempts from within 39 yards.Blake Grupe, New York JetsGrupe has been around the NFL for a while and is still just age 27. He signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2023 and earned the starting job over Will Lutz—who was traded to the Denver Broncos. He held the job for two-and-a-half years until a late November slump ended his run in New Orleans. The Colts immediately claimed Grupe and he made all 11 of his field goals with the team last season. His career long is 60 yards; however, he’s made just 19 of 27 attempts from beyond 50. Street free agentsTanner BrownOriginally signed by the Rams after going undrafted in 2023. He competed with Christopher Dunn in training camp. Effectively both players lost the job as LA signed Brett Maher before the start of the regular season. But Brown has found his footing in the United Football League (UFL). He made 25 of 28 field goals during the 2026 season for the Louisville Kings. He made all three of his attempts from beyond 60 yards, which is a four-point play in the UFL. Younghoe KooStarted the 2025 season with the Falcons before struggling in Week 1. He landed with the Giants and was released in December.Koo spent a portion of offseason team activities with the Jets before being cut in May 2026. He tried out for the Tennessee Titans in August and remains unsigned. It’s uncertain whether Koo would be better than Mevis or simply just different.
