More trouble for Barcelona as key defender goes out injured against Real MadridBarcelona suffered another injury setback during their 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid, with Xavi Espart forced off in the 29th minute of the first El Clasico of the 2026/27 season. The young defender had started at Spotify Camp Nou but was unable to continue after experiencing increasing discomfort, leaving Hansi Flick facing further uncertainty over his defensive options.Alejandro Balde replaced Espart, while Joao Cancelo moved across to right-back. Barcelona must now await medical tests to determine the extent of Espart’s injury and how long the academy graduate could be unavailable.Xavi Espart forced off after struggling with discomfortEspart had made a promising start to the match before his physical problems became impossible to ignore. The defender had already experienced discomfort in his soleus muscle during the week leading up to El Clasico and received an injection before the game to help him play. His condition appeared to worsen following contact with Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni earlier in the match. Although Espart attempted to continue, he struggled with the discomfort and eventually went to ground after trying to chase Yan Diomande. The Barcelona coaching staff subsequently decided to withdraw him rather than risk aggravating the problem. Espart left the pitch to applause from the home supporters, having shown his determination to remain involved despite his difficulties. The exact nature and severity of the injury remain unclear, with further medical examinations required before Barcelona can establish a recovery timeline.Balde replaces Espart as Flick reshuffles defenceFlick reacted to Espart’s withdrawal by introducing Balde, who had seen limited playing time during the season despite featuring in Barcelona’s Champions League meeting with Paris Saint-Germain.The substitution prompted a defensive reshuffle, with Balde taking the left-back position and Cancelo moving to his natural role on the right. The adjustment gave Barcelona an experienced alternative but disrupted the defensive setup Flick had selected for the Clasico.Espart’s absence is particularly frustrating given the progress he has made this season. His display against PSG in Paris further strengthened his reputation as one of Barcelona’s emerging defensive talents.Barcelona face growing defensive injury concernsEspart’s injury adds to an increasingly difficult situation for Flick, with Eric Garcia, Jules Kounde, Andreas Christensen and Roony Bardghji also on Barcelona’s injury list, according to the supplied report. The growing number of absentees threatens to limit Flick’s ability to rotate his defence during a demanding period of the season. Espart had taken advantage of his opportunities to establish himself in the first team, making the latest setback particularly disappointing for the youngster.
