Marlins’ 2026 Awards Show Promise Despite Missing Playoffs

Credit: Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY SportsThe Miami Marlins missed the postseason by eight games, yet their players are already grabbing national attention. This team has real talent that deserves recognition, even if the final record falls short. It is a sign of progress that three different players are now in the running for major awards.Defensive Stars Shine BrightOne of the three National League Gold Glove finalists at third base is Javier Sanoja. He faces tough competition from Alex Bregman and Max Muncy, but Sanoja has a track record. He won the utility player award last year, and his defensive runs saved total five. Rawlings will announce the winners on Sunday night during an ESPN broadcast. His teammate Otto Lopez had a massive year at shortstop that cannot be ignored. Lopez led all qualifying National League shortstops with a .305 batting average and 34 stolen bases. He also played a career-high 157 games and led the entire Majors with 191 hits. His speed and consistency made him a key piece of the lineup all season.Pitching Staff Finds Its GrooveSandy Alcantara is back to his dominant self after a rough recovery in 2025. He led all of Major League Baseball with 214 innings pitched and threw 3,293 total pitches. He tied for first in the league with 33 starts and showed he can still carry the rotation.Marlins president of baseball operations Peter Bendix knows the team needs to win more games next year. He told the media after the season ended that the club is not satisfied with falling short. “That said, I’m also very proud of our team, our organization,” Bendix said. He admitted the club must figure out how to get from contention to the postseason in 2027.The front office faces hard choices about contracts and roster moves this winter. Sports Illustrated reports the team might have to decide on Alcantara’s $21 million option for next year. They also need to address the future of Kyle Stowers, who has shown great potential but struggles with hamstring injuries.Room to Grow Before 2027Bendix admitted there is work to do before the team can win a division title. He noted that the goal is to go deep into October and repeat that success every year. “There are always things that we can do better,” Bendix said. The team needs to improve defense at first base and right field to reach that next level. With Lopez leading in hits and Sanoja guarding the hot corner, the foundation is solid.
