LIV Golf Gets One Last Chance With Just 15 Players

Jerod Ringwald-Imagn ImagesLIV Golf is running out of time to prove it can survive without the money that once fueled its rise. The promotion set a deadline of October 25 to lock in player commitments for a new version of the tour. That date passed yesterday with far fewer golfers signed up than the organizers needed to move forward. This number falls well short of the “30 to 40 players” that BC Partners, the investment firm backing the tour, said were required for viability. The gap is wide, and the math does not look good for a healthy restart next season.More Time, Same ProblemsScott O’Neil along with his group chose to extend the deadline until this week concludes. The Financial Times noted that these athletes’ tentative pledges represent “enough interest for the start-up league to seek a final deal in the coming days” It is a stretch, but it is the only play left on the board. The situation is worse than just a low number. Several big names have already left. Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, and Ian Poulter have all publicly announced their departures from the breakaway tour. These are not minor figures; they are the stars who made the league worth watching in the first place.Even those who might stay are holding out for more cash. More than 10 players, with Dustin Johnson leading the group, told The Athletic they united to negotiate what they view as “severance deals.” They are not asking O’Neil for money. They want a payout from the Saudi Public Investment Fund before they agree to join LIV 2.0.The Cost of a Broken TrustThe tour is trying to climb out of a grave it dug itself. The 2026 season ended prematurely back in August with a quiet tournament in Indianapolis. The league laid off most of its staff and now operates mostly in conference rooms and bankruptcy courts. The glamour is gone, and the financial backing has shifted.Applying pressure forms a key element of their campaign, as players understand the leverage they possess. The group led by Johnson knows that without their names, the league has no product. They are waiting for the Saudi fund to pay up, not the new investors. This standoff could kill the deal before it even starts.Brandel Chamblee, a former PGA Tour pro turned Golf Channel analyst, offered his thoughts on the mess. He posted on X stating that “opening the door and handing them a seat at the table are two very different things”He contends that offering these athletes a second chance threatens to mock those who secured their first. The window is closing fast. If the league cannot secure a final deal by the end of the week, the 15 interested players might not be enough to save the tour.
