On Sunday, the dam finally broke on the Jameis Winston experience for the New York Giants. Winston hadn't exactly been playing well in the lead-up to a matchup with the New Orleans Saints, but the Giants' status atop a chaotic NFC East at least somewhat justified keeping him in place as the starting quarterback. When an inept Winston threw his second pick at the helm of a rudderless Giants offense at the start of the fourth quarter, Giants head coach John Harbaugh finally pulled the plug. He benched Winston and inserted reclamation project J.J. McCarthy, who helped New York almost pull off a 24-point rally in the last 10 minutes. The Saints would win 34-27. Based on Harbaugh's comments after the Giants' loss, it sure sounds like there's a real chance of Big Blue sticking with the younger McCarthy moving forward rather than riding with the veteran Winston, who has been uninspiring for most of the season:John Harbaugh on who the Giants' starting QB is going forward:"I can't answer that now. It's not even up for conversation or discussion right now. ... Those things will all be decided not 10 minutes after the game." pic.twitter.com/ypZcNJvZuk— Ralph Vacchiano (@RalphVacchiano) October 18, 2026A noncommittal Harbaugh, saying he won't make a quarterback decision right after the game, is certainly enough to cast serious doubt on Winston's starting status after this. The Giants will undoubtedly be made fun of for turning to McCarthy if that happens, but at least they can justify it by saying McCarthy has more upside as a younger player. At this point, a 32-year-old Winston is what he is: A middling backup quarterback who is an active hindrance to his offense. McCarthy is probably still that, too, just younger, but there's a small chance he could grow with more game reps. The Giants probably owe it to themselves to try.
