Joel Hofer Is Quietly Building A Vezina Case

Joe Puetz-Imagn ImagesJoel Hofer is not the goalie everyone talks about, but he is the one winning games right now. While big markets get the hype, the Blues netminder has put up numbers that demand attention. Bleedin Blue reports that after nine games, Hofer’s record is 5-3-1, his goals against average is 2.24, and his save percentage is .923. Those stats look good on paper, but the real story is how he got them. He is facing nearly 29 shots per game, which is a heavy load for a defense that still leaks chances. Most top goalies play behind walls that stop shots before they reach the crease. Hofer does not have that luxury.Stealing Games When It MattersThe proof is in the specific nights where the offense went quiet. On Oct. 2 against Dallas, Hofer made 25 saves for a shutout. He stopped all seven high-danger shots while the Stars generated roughly 3.14 expected goals. That is a massive performance when the team needs a win. He did it again on Oct. 19 against Winnipeg, stopping 32 of 33 shots in a 2-1 victory. The Jets created 2.49 expected goals, yet Hofer finished 1.49 goals better than expected. Just three days later, per Bleedin Blue, he stopped nine of 11 high-danger shots against Vegas. These are the kinds of stops that keep a team alive when the offense fails to show up.A goalie who can steal points under pressure has a much stronger case for the league’s best than one who benefits from a perfect defensive system. The official starter role now belongs to Hofer, having moved from backup to sharing starts. Should he continue halting top chances at this pace, the national conversation must include him. He is only 26 years old and carries a $3.4 million cap hit, which is a bargain for this level of play. His contract runs through the 2026-27 season, the same time Jordan Binnington’s deal expires. The Blues have a clear path forward if this performance holds.Recent Form Against BostonThe momentum continued on Thursday night against the Boston Bruins. The Blues took a 4-1 lead with Robert Thomas and Philip Broberg each recording one goal and two assists. Jimmy Snuggerud and Jake Neighbours also found the back of the net. In the victory where the team broke a streak of being shut out in its two previous contests, Hofer made 31 saves. Per THE BIG 1050, fourteen of his stops came in the third period alone. Boston held a 14-2 shot advantage in that final frame and 32-18 for the entire game. James Hagens scored the lone Boston goal with a crafty between-the-legs deflection early in the first period. The Blues overcame that early deficit with four unanswered goals. The team received a lift from a 2-for-3 showing on the power play. Broberg netted the game-winner in the second period after taking Connor McMichael’s pass behind the goal line. Thomas walked down the middle of the ice and whipped a shot past Jeremy Swayman. During the final frame at 12:42, Neighbours added insurance with another power-play marker. The Bruins dropped both ends of their two-game road trip while Hofer continued his steady climb. He is not just surviving the workload; he is thriving in it. The Vezina Trophy is won over a long season, but Hofer has already shown he belongs in the race.
