Mandatory Credit: Troy Taormina-Imagn ImagesOn Tuesday, the veteran MMA reporter Ariel Helwani used his show to respond to UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland, who called him a “leach” and “the most biased weak man on the internet” earlier this week.Helwani didn’t hold back. He took aim at Strickland’s online persona, his politics, and the contract that has him at odds with the UFC.Strickland vs. HelwaniStrickland has been feuding with the UFC over his pay since reclaiming the middleweight title from Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 328 in May. He signed a six-fight deal before that bout, but has since said he won’t fight again until his compensation gets sorted out.Helwani discussed the dispute on his show, arguing that Strickland signed the deal and the UFC has every right to hold him to it. Strickland didn’t take kindly to that.“I cant [freaking] stand Ariel. I am telling you the moment I stopped supporting israel hes been my number 1 hater… Man went from thanking me for supporting them to my biggest hater lmao. Youre the most biased weak man on the internet,” Strickland wrote in a post on X on Monday.“You meet Ariel and you understand he is a leach. Dana called it day 1,” Strickland added in a follow-up postIt isn’t the first time Strickland has gone there. Back in May, he called Helwani “a pathetic MMA leech” after. Helwani criticized his trash talk surrounding the Chimaev fight.‘Israel Derangement Syndrome’Helwani responded on his show Tuesday, in a clip shared by Happy Punch. He said he saw the Israel angle coming.“I predicted that all he would say in response is something about me and Israel, because Sean Strickland has what we like to call in the business Israel Derangement Syndrome,” Helwani said.According to Helwani, Strickland goes there because “he knows that the incels on Twitter are gonna just eat that all up.”“I am not the state of Israel. I am not the Israeli government. I am Jewish. I support Israel’s right to exist and defend itself,” he added.Helwani then turned one of Strickland’s favorite insults right back at him.“You know, [Sean] likes to use the word goy slop. He is the actual – and I know this is gonna kill him – the actual very definition of that term, because if you don’t know what the word goy means, it’s a Yiddish term for a non-Jew,” Helwani said. “He is that, and everything he does is sloppy.”‘He Doesn’t Live in Reality’Helwani also took aim at Strickland’s tendency to stir things up online.“He doesn’t live in reality. Everything he does, everything he thinks about is the internet. That’s where he lives,” Helwani said.“He can’t call someone up, he can’t ask for advice, he doesn’t have confidants, he doesn’t have friends that he can actually talk to. He goes online and talks to all of you. Half of the people aren’t even real that he’s talking to,” he continued.Helwani went on to call Strickland a “flip-flopper” who will “say whatever he thinks is the most controversial thing to say.” He pointed to Strickland’s support for the Supreme Court striking down student loan forgiveness in 2023 as an example. As for Strickland’s recent push for Alberta independence, Helwani wasn’t buying it.“Oh yeah, he knows [freaking] nothing about Alberta’s desire to separate from Canada. But let me just latch onto this thing to get some engagement,” Helwani said.‘What the [expletive] was I leeching off of?’The “leech” label clearly struck a nerve. Helwani pointed out that he spent years covering the sport for little to no money before it ever paid off.“You know [expletive] nothing about what I’ve built and what I’ve done. You drive to the gym every day and get punched in the face, and you think that you are some sort of like holier-than-thou guy because you fight for a living,” he continued.Helwani did make it clear that he respects fighters “who put their lives on the line.” But he wasn’t about to take a lecture on sacrifice.‘You Got Played’Helwani also doubled down on his take about Strickland’s contract, saying the deal “has essentially put him in career jail.”“They put that little shiny toy in front of you, and you signed a 6-fight deal, and now you’re freaking out because you realized that you can’t go to Zuffa Boxing, you can’t go box. You won’t fight Jake Paul, that’s for damn sure,” Helwani said.“What are you gonna have when this is done? You’re gonna have a [expletive] contract that’s attached to you that you’re not gonna be able to get out of from now until, I don’t know, 2032,” he added.Helwani also warned that the UFC could “take that little prop title away and give it to someone else.”He argued that if Strickland really wants change, he should rally other fighters and “try to change this once and for all.”“You’re not gonna do that because you just care about yourself,” Helwani said.To wrap things up, Helwani offered to meet Strickland face-to-face at Extreme Couture in Las Vegas, with no cameras.“Tell me where I’m wrong. Tell me what I said was inaccurate. I would love to hear it,” Helwani said. The post ‘He doesn’t live in reality’: MMA reporter Ariel Helwani does not hold back on Sean Strickland appeared first on The Comeback: Today’s Top Sports Stories & Reactions.
