Oct. 26—***Those us of lucky enough to work in sports receive constant reminders that the players and coaches we deal with daily have their own lives, families and heartbreaks.Illinois released a statement Sunday that football coach Bret Bielema had lost his father Arnie earlier in the day.The sixth-year Illinois leader was able to visit with his dad on Thursday and Friday ahead of his team's game against Oregon.In his comments, the coach thanked his wife, kids and staff for their support. While it is impossible to know what Bielema is feeling, we have all been there in some form. We have lost parents, siblings, close friends. The grieving process is very personal and can take many forms.Bielema, who has ingratiated himself with the fan base during a successful run in Champaign-Urbana, will have the full support of the community as he works through it. Everyone understands and will allow him the time to heal.Hopefully. football serves as a valuable asset for Bielema and a way to honor his father.
