Boos for Quinn Hughes, then the Wild cruise

On a night where Wild defenseman Quinn Hughes was the center of attention, good and bad, the Minnesota star spurred his new team to a big win versus his former team.In his first game back in the place where his NHL career began, Hughes had a goal and an assist — the 500th and 501st points of his career — as the Wild cruised to a 4-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday night at Rogers Arena.Maxim Shabanov, Bobby Brink and Kirill Kaprizov added goals for the Wild, who improved to 8-3-2 overall. Calvin Pickard, making his second start for Minnesota, got his first win in a Wild sweater with 16 saves.Vancouver, which is off to a miserable start to the season, recorded the first six shots of the game and played physical hockey early, but Minnesota turned the tables quickly. The Wild’s power play, which had struggled on the previous three games of the road trip, quieted the feisty crowd late in the first when Shabanov snapped home a shot from the top of the crease following a set-up pass from Kaprizov.Minnesota broke it open in the middle frame, sending the Canucks to a 10th straight loss when Brink got a pretty one for his first goal of the season. After a pass from Michael McCarron, Brink made a deft move to pull the Vancouver goalie out of position, then tucked the puck inside the post. It was Brink’s first goal since March 21 last season.Hughes hit the 500-point milestone with his third goal of the season, drawing another mix of cheers and boos. After Kaprizov’s NHL-best 13th goal, the Canucks ruined Pickard’s bid for a shutout with a breakaway goal. Brock Boeser added a late goal for Vancouver, but they got no closer. Canucks goalie Leevi Merilainen had 30 saves.Minnesota, now 2-1-1 on their season-long five-game road trip, wraps up the stretch of away games with a visit to the Utah Mammoth on Tuesday. The opening faceoff is at 8 p.m. Central.BrieflyMeeting with the media in Vancouver before the game, Wild coach John Hynes said it is unlikely that brothers Marcus and Nick Foligno, who are both home in Minnesota dealing with injuries, will join the team for their Tuesday game in Utah, which closes the five-game road trip.“The Folignos are skating and coming back. I don’t have any timeline on any of them at this point,” Hynes said, adding that defenseman Brock Faber’s road back from a skull fracture suffered in a preseason game continues.“We haven’t really talked about it as much either, other than updates on where they’re at,” he said. “Brock’s seeing a doctor so I’ll probably have more (information) maybe on Tuesday in Utah.”Related Articles Wild: Quinn Hughes prepped for derision before return to Vancouver Dominant second period helps Wild go slumpless in Seattle Minnesota Wild games picked up by DIRECTV Myers: Are the Devils loading up to attract Wild star Quinn Hughes?
