Alex Cora Reveals What Really Upset Him About How Red Sox Handled Firing

Former Boston Red Sox manager Alex CoraAlex Cora spoke to Baseball Isn't Boring about his firing and revealed some new details about the entire situation. The Red Sox started 10-17 under Cora after a very aggressive offseason, and Craig Breslow had seen enough. On Saturday, April 25, the team decided to fire Cora and other coaches on the team. Cora revealed that Breslow was not on the trip with the team, but flew to Baltimore with Sam Kennedy and John Henry, and sent Cora a text saying he wanted to meet.Cora admitted that he knew at that moment that he was about to be fired, but was more upset with his coaches paying the price."The thing that really upset me that Saturday was that other guys paid the price," Cora said on Baseball Isn't Boring. "Not only the coaches, but the players paid the price because you take away a whole group from the equation, and it's going to take time. It's going to take time."Looking for the perfect gift for a baseball player in your life? Check out our brand new baseball lifestyle brand!"We live in an industry that dissects everything. I think the thing that people love to talk about, right, is when a player is hot for a small period of time, small sample size. So, if we're going to talk small sample size, then that was a small sample size. But they made the decision. I think, you know, getting rid of the coaches for me was kind of like, shoot, you know. If they were looking for a new voice, then you know, I was the voice. Get rid of me."Along with Cora, the Red Sox got rid of hitting coach Peter Fatse, third base coach Kyle Hudson, bench coach Ramón Vázquez, assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson, and major league hitting strategy coach Joe Cronin. Jason Varitek was reassigned, but he has not been with the organization since Cora was fired.Cora noted that he understood bench coach Vázquez getting fired, but he was surprised by the other coaches also being let go."Yeah, it was surprising but at the same time like I said before, I think he's he said it," Cora said. "He felt like he needed a change, you know, and the way he has talked about the approach and player development and the development of players at the big league level, it wasn't happening. It seems like, you know, the way he talks about the people that stayed and that came over, they had that background, and it feels more comfortable now because player development is one of the pillars of the organization."More MLB: Ex-Rays Star Withdraws From Mariners Manager Hunt: Report
