  • Here are storylines and players to watch in the Wildcats' game against the Volunteers.

LEXINGTON — Kentucky football is back at it this week. After its lone open date of the 2026 season, UK and coach Will Stein will hit the road to take on Tennessee. The Wildcats are 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the SEC. Kentucky is tied for first in the conference standings alongside Georgia, which beat Florida in Atlanta on Oct. 31.Tennessee is trying to keep pace in the league race, sitting at 6-2 (3-2).Here are three things to watch heading into the clash between the Wildcats and Volunteers at Neyland Stadium:Kentucky vs. Tennessee has SEC title game, playoff implicationsIt is not hyperbole to say this is one of the most important games in the history of this series. This will be only the fourth time the two schools are both ranked in the top 20 at the time of the game — Kentucky is No. 7 in the US LBM Coaches Poll and No. 8 in the Associated Press Top 25, while Tennessee is 16th in both. The bad news for the Wildcats? They're 0-3 in the three previous top-20 matchups. The results:1950: No. 9 Tennessee 7, No. 3 Kentucky 0 — This was UK's only loss in a season in which it went 11-1, capped by a Sugar Bowl victory over top-ranked Oklahoma.1951: No. 1 Tennessee 28, No. 9 Kentucky 0 — The Volunteers went on to finish No. 1 in the final AP and UPI polls that season, but those votes were taken before bowl games. UT lost to Maryland in the Sugar Bowl.2022: No. 3 Tennessee 44, No. 19 Kentucky 6 — The Vols torched the overmatched Cats in Knoxville. But after improving to 8-0 with the win, Tennessee dropped two of its next three games and failed to make the then-four-team playoff.Despite that dismal backdrop for Kentucky, Stein has made plenty of history in Year 1 at the helm. Giving UK only its fourth win in the past 42 meetings with UT would add to Stein's stellar maiden campaign.Even if the Wildcats lose, they have some buffer room. It would be only their second setback, overall and in conference competition, this season. Kentucky still would be in the running for an SEC championship game appearance and a College Football Playoff berth. The Vols don't have the same margin for error.Already saddled with two losses, a third would leave Tennessee on the brink of playoff elimination. Since the playoff expanded to 12 teams in 2024, no team has made the field with three regular-season losses (Alabama's third loss last year came in the SEC title game). UT wants to do everything it can to avoid putting itself in that position.Who took better advantage of bye week?Yes, Kentucky didn't have a game on Halloween. But neither did Tennessee. As it worked out, both teams' only open date this fall occurred the same week. Two key players sat out Oct. 24 during UK's 34-17 win over Vanderbilt: linebacker Sam Greene and wide receiver Nic Anderson. The Cats hope they have all hands on deck versus the Vols.Tennessee had no new injuries in its last-second loss to South Carolina on Oct. 24. But the Vols already had a whopping seven players out for the season, including three starters: left guard Wendell Moe; safety Edrees Farooq (knee) and tight end Ethan Davis (knee). What concerned UT and its coaching staff far more than ailments were the costly mistakes that led to the South Carolina setback. The Volunteers committed 12 penalties that day. Three of those took touchdowns off the board. In a game they lost 27-24.Who will start at quarterback for the Vols? The starting signal-caller for the Vols is anyone's guess at this point. When asked about the ongoing competition between sophomore George MacIntyre and freshman Faizon Brandon, Tennessee coach Josh Heupel shed little light on the matter."They’re both practicing and practiced well today," Heupel said Oct. 28.Brandon was QB1 for Tennessee's first five games; MacIntyre has started the past three.MacIntyre has completed 67% of his attempts (69 for 103) for 728 yards and two touchdowns, but also has tossed three interceptions. Brandon is 61-of-101 passing (60%) for 697 yards and seven scores against just one INT.Brandon also has been more of a threat with his feet, scoring three times on the ground. MacIntyre has yet to record a rushing TD.Kentucky football players to watchKenny Minchey, quarterback: Steady as she goes for the senior signal-caller. He's gone six straight games without an interception. And he has only one pick the entire season. Minchey has connected on 69% of his passes (160 for 232) for 1,755 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2026.Willie Rodriguez, tight end: The junior star has a team-best 39 receptions, one ahead of Kenny Darby's 38. Rodriguez has 324 yards receiving and three TDs, and he also scored on the ground (on a broken play) in the victory over Vandy.Ty Bryant, defensive back: The Lexington native has an interception in three straight games. With four overall, he's tied for the SEC lead with teammate Jordan Castell.Tennessee football players to watchDeSean Bishop, running back: The local product from Knoxville has been one of the best players in college football this season. Bishop is among the top three in the SEC in yards per carry (5.6), total rushing yards (957), rushing yards per game (119.6), rushing TDs (11) and all-purpose yards per outing (127.6).Xavier Gilliam, defensive lineman: A 6-foot-2, 305-pound junior, Gilliam started his college career at Penn State. Following ex-Nittany Lions defensive coordinator Jim Knowles to Knoxville, Gilliam has thrived. He's collected 11½ tackles for loss in 2026; only two conference players have more (Colin Simmons has 16 for Texas while Princewill Umanmielen has tallied 12 for LSU.)Ty Redmond, defensive back: A Georgia native, Redmond has been a terror to throw against this fall. He has nine pass breakups, tied for second-most in the league.Kentucky vs. Tennessee football predictionTennessee 20, Kentucky 17: The Cats are just 11-45-6 against the Vols in Knoxville. Tennessee is desperate: It can't afford another loss if it wants to make the College Football Playoff.
