Dodgers, Yankees, Phillies battling for elite teenage phenom flamethrower in free agency originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Los Angeles Dodgers have made a habit of pursuing the biggest arms in free agency over the last few years. They showed that commitment again by trading for one of the game's top pitchers, Tarik Skubal, at the trade deadline. This winter could be no different, as Los Angeles looks to add even more pitching talent. That could happen despite the Dodgers already having one of the deepest pitching staffs in baseball.“On one hand, the Dodgers are flush with starting pitching for 2027, perhaps more so than any other organization. Shohei Ohtani is adamant about being a two-way player again in 2027; Snell, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Tyler Glasnow remain under contract; and Roki Sasaki, Emmet Sheehan, Justin Wrobleski and Gavin Stone all seem ready to hold down a rotation spot in the major leagues,” ESPN’s Alden Gonzales wrote.Even with that depth, the Dodgers are reportedly among several teams pursuing Japanese pitching prospect Shoki Oda. The New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies and other MLB clubs are also in the mix.“Shoki Oda is expected to meet with several MLB clubs in the coming hours, including the Dodgers, Yankees, Phillies, among others. Oda would presumably be eligible to sign starting January 15, 2027, when the new international signing period begins, if it is not postponed,” MLB reporter Francys Romero wrote.Oda was selected in the first round of the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) draft in Japan but declined to join the organization.“Typically, prospects from Japan get drafted by an NPB team, develop their game in Japan, then get posted for American teams to sign as free agents. Once a player commits to NPB, they are locked into the league for a set period, so they must wait for eligibility before being posted. Oda wants to avoid all of that, and with his decision to pitch in America directly, he needs to decide whether to pitch in college and enter the amateur draft or enter international amateur free agency,” Dodgers Nation’s Nelson Espinal wrote.Los Angeles is just one of several teams pursuing Oda. The Yankees and Phillies could also pose a serious threat, particularly given their own needs for starting pitching. It will be interesting to see how the competition unfolds and where the young pitcher ultimately decides to sign.At 18 years old, Oda is looking to make his mark in professional baseball. However, it remains unclear how quickly an organization would allow him to reach the major leagues. He could need time to develop in the minor leagues, but his talent has already made him an attractive target for multiple teams.More MLB news:Dodgers predicted to sign Padres' $3.9M All-Star flamethrower to create lethal duo with Ediwn DiazBraves predicted to trade $35M fan favorite, two-time Silver Slugger winner, 4x Gold Glove winnerPhillies predicted to sign $61M 4-time Gold Glove winner, ex-Cubs switch-hitting bat to fill needYankees predicted to sign 39-HR Triple Crown winner, part ways with disappointing Ryan McMahon
