"It's awesome," said CVCA coach Ella Mihacevich, in her first year leading the program, after a 25-21, 17-25, 25-21, 25-15 victory. "I have believed in these girls from day one, and I've been saying all year we want to be peaking at the end of the season. We play in a tough conference, we've taken our losses, but we also have learned how to bounce back." The Royals were able to bounce back from a tough second set, which included a 10-point service run by Greenmen star setter Kaylie Liepins. CVCA junior Emily Hay had six of her 12 kills in the critical and ultimately decisive third set, frequently turning to soft "change-up" spikes into the middle of the defense. "We've been trying to teach the kids when you do something once and it works, keep doing it until they prove they can stop it," Mihacevich said. "She found that that was going to be her spot for the night and she kept going over and over and they didn't seem to pick it up, so she kept working it." Aurora did a great job early defending leading CVCA hitter Mariah Howell, but the senior could only be contained for so long. She ultimately had a team-high 15 kills while also impressing on defense with 12 digs — second only to star libero Julia Wiggers, a junior. Howell became the Royals' all-time leader in kills in the win. "If I'm any other team, I'm game-planning, 'How do we shut down Mariah Howell,' and they did a really nice job strategizing around her, but it's a huge testament to the way the rest of her game has developed," Mihacevich said. "Last year, she was a three-rotation player. She didn't get to contribute much if she wasn't getting kills, and this year, she's passed for us, she's played defense, she's serving really tough, she's making a lot of plays that don't show up on the stat sheet and that's how she contributed for the good chunk of the match tonight, and then when we needed her to come alive, she was ready and she did her job." Junior Leah Tichnell added a team-high 24 assists for CVCA, which will next face Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin in a Nov. 5 regional semifinal in Mentor. Liepins had an impressive night, leading Aurora with 29 assists, 15 digs and 15 service points. Senior Aubrey Verdova, the Greenmen's all-time leader in kills, was also among the team's leaders in kills (nine) and digs (10) against the Royals. In a great sign for the future, freshman Josie Schadle led Aurora with 10 kills while sophomore Gigi Goedert tied Verdova with nine. The Akron Beacon Journal sports department can be contacted via email at bjsports@thebeaconjournal.com.
