Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner hinted heads could roll in a Zoom interview on Oct. 21. He thought he’d get a better return on his $308 million payroll. He thought Brian Cashman built a roster that was good enough to win the World Series. A week after the Rays swept the Yankees in a Division Series, Steinbrenner was still mad. He called out the offense. He said an investigation already was underway on the unexpected firestorm — Yankees greats and their last World Series-winning manager publicly bashing the organization for its clubhouse culture and lack of fundamentals.Steinbrenner vowed to look into everything “from top to bottom, as we do every year.”Since that interview, franchise legend Jorge Posada said he didn’t feel welcome being around the team in a New York Post podcast. Brewers manager Pat Murphy was caught on camera taking a shot at the Yankees while he was on the field hugging a player after his club won the World Series. Hall of Fame reliever Goose Gossage told NJ.com that he noticed glaring front office and on-field issues when he was a spring training guest instructor.Well, the Yankees are making big changes. The first to go are two of the three Cashman aides with GM experience.Executive advisor to the GM Brian Sabean and baseball operations senior advisor Omar Minaya will not have their expiring contracts renewed, Post baseball columnist Jon Heyman reported Saturday on X.Both were hired to assist Cashman two days apart in the first week of 2023.These departures are puzzling, especially Sabean, who has a great resume.Sabean was the San Francisco Giants GM for 18 years, winning World Series in 2010, 2012 and 2014. His career in baseball began as a Yankees scout in 1985 and he was their VP of player development and scouting when the Core Four joined the organization.Sabean drafted Andy Pettitte and Posada in 1990 and Derek Jeter in 1992. He oversaw the signing of Mariano Rivera in 1990.Minaya, who turns 68 on Nov. 10, was MLB’s first Hispanic GM when he was with the Montreal Expos from 2002-04. He also was with the Mets from September 2004 through the 2010 season. With Sabean and Minaya leaving the organization, special assignments scout Jim Hendry is the only member of the organization with GM experience besides Cashman, who is returning in 2027 for his 30th season on a new multi-year contract.Hendry was the Cubs GM from July 2002 through Aug. 2011. He joined the Yankees on Jan. 31, 2012.Cashman’s staff includes VP assistant GMs Jean Afterman and Michael Fishman, baseball operations VP Tim Naehring. He also has three former Yankees players working as special assistants — Hideki Matsui, Nick Swisher and Pettitte.Surely, bigger changes are coming. What’s next? The Yankees haven’t finalized their 2027 coaching staff. Hitting coach James Rowson is among those whose status is uncertain. Also, the Yankees have 10 free agents and some definitely won’t be back. It’s believed the Yankees will not make an offer to re-sign second baseman Jazz Chisholm, a central figure in the clubhouse criticism. Here are other recent NJ.com Yankees posts:-- Another Yankees legend piles on organizational bashing: ‘Mr. Steinbrenner is rolling over in his grave’-- Jorge Posada was right about Yankees — and that’s not even the worst of it | Klapisch-- Brewers manager rips Yankees during World Series celebration: ‘Everyone playing for themselves’-- Should Yankees give Giancarlo Stanton another shot?
