WEST LAFAYETTE — A relationship Purdue already held with one of the state's most respected scientific brands will now extend to Boilermaker basketball with its latest athletics sponsorship deal. Eli Lilly and Company on Friday announced court logo sponsorship agreements with both Purdue and Indiana. The pharmaceutical giant's logo will appear on both Keady Court in Mackey Arena and Branch McCracken Court in Assembly Hall. This is Purdue's second playing surface sponsorship announced since NCAA approval for such deals went into effect Aug. 1. Later that month, Purdue was one of 13 athletic programs to announce a football playing field sponsorship deal with Progressive.A new release characterizes the Lilly sponsorship as multi-year. Financial terms were not disclosed. Because the agreements are made with Learfield-run Purdue Sports Properties, they are not subject to public records disclosure. The agreement comes as Purdue and other athletic programs feel a sense of urgency to find new revenue streams. Direct payments to athletes through revenue share added a significant new line item to budgets, beginning with the 2025-26 academic year.“Purdue and Lilly share a long-standing commitment to innovation, excellence and making a meaningful difference in the lives of others,” Purdue athletic director Tommy McClelland said in the news release. “That shared commitment is what makes this partnership so special."While Lilly’s presence on Keady Court will certainly be visible, the significance of this relationship extends well beyond the basketball floor. These are two great institutions within the State of Indiana with a rich history of working together to advance groundbreaking research and create opportunities that impact lives. We are incredibly grateful for Lilly’s continued investment in Purdue and excited to build upon that relationship in a way that directly enhances the experience of our Boilermaker student-athletes and benefits the broader Purdue community.”Purdue and Eli Lilly and Company share longstanding connectionLilly always seemed like a natural fit for a sponsorship agreement. In November, it became the first pharmaceutical company to achieve a $1 trillion market capitalization. It also made sense Lilly might not want to partner with one of the state's two Big Ten athletic programs and alienate the other.Lilly chair and CEO David A. Ricks is a Purdue graduate and a member of the board of trustees since January 2025. The company and the university share a longstanding connection in research, scholarships and other academic endeavors. On the gridiron: Purdue lands corporate sponsorship deal for football field and moreVia the Lilly-Purdue 260 Initiative, announced in May 2025, the company agreed to invest up to $250 million over eight years to fund research and manufacturing toward pharmaceutical innovation. Lilly, as part of its support for the LEAP Innovation and Research District, plans to invest $9 billion in Purdue's Boone County manufacturing complex.“In Indiana, basketball is how communities come together, from packed arenas to driveway dunking,” said Lina Polimeni, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, consumer, at Lilly, in the news release. “At Lilly, we believe health comes first, and exercise is one of the most powerful tools we have to protect it. We’re proud to partner with Indiana and Purdue Athletics on two of college basketball’s most storied courts and celebrate a game that keeps the whole state moving.”What other sponsorships will Purdue add in the future? While the deal announced Friday brings in significant revenue, additional lucrative deals should follow. Purdue continues to pursue jersey patch sponsorships similar to ones signed by several other Big Ten programs.Earlier this month, Indiana and Merchants Bank announced a jersey patch and Memorial Stadium field naming rights deal. Illinois (Busey Bank), Ohio State (JP Morgan Chase), Notre Dame (SoFi) and Wisconsin (Culver's) also made similar agreements. From the other side: Indiana football field adding sponsor. Why it matters in college sports money raceMcClelland, after his introductory news conference on Aug. 7, told IndyStar Purdue was better off having not yet signed an agreement. Some deals announced after the first batch − such as Illinois' reported $30 million deal with Busey, a local bank – had reset the market.Purdue teams have also made some competitive advancements this fall. The football team's three wins in the first seven games equaled the total from the past two seasons combined. Volleyball remains a nationally relevant program, sitting just outside the top 10 in the rankings. Women's soccer has broken into the national top 20."What we don’t want to do is undervalue ourselves for the sake of some amount," McClelland said that day.Lilly put a value on a relationship with Boilermaker basketball as Purdue continues to build its sponsorship portfolio.Nathan Baird and Sam King have the best Purdue sports coverage, and sign up for IndyStar's Boilermakers newsletter. This article originally appeared on Indianapolis Star: Why court sponsor at Mackey Arena is important step for Purdue Athletics
