Now this is a proper regular season game. The 6-0 Vikings and the best, most unique defense in the NFL. The 4-2 Lions and their elite offense. Major stakes in the NFC North. Kevin Burkhardt and Tom Brady on the call for FOX.When the Lions have the ball, the chess match between Brian Flores and Blake Cashman on one end and Drew Petzing and Jared Goff on the other should be nothing short of spectacular. When the Vikings have the ball, Kevin O’Connell and Kyler Murray have a ton to prove against a Detroit defense that has struggled quite a bit but does possess some high-level talent.Let’s dive into our weekly preview. From the practice field: What they’re sayingBoth sides of this division rivalry understandably have plenty of respect for the other. The Lions haven’t denied the reality of the difficulties the Vikings’ defense presents. Meanwhile, even after winning both games against Detroit last year, Flores knows how dangerous Goff and Jahmyr Gibbs and Amon-Ra St. Brown and the rest of the Lions’ weapons are.“His ability to extract information from the defense with shifts, motions, cadence, and his ability to gather that information and then make the correct reads, throws is high-level,” Flores said of Goff this week. “I think he’s one of the best in the league, and they’ve got a great skill group, and he knows how to distribute the ball to all of them. This is a major challenge. Certainly keeping me up the last couple nights.”It hasn’t been a good start to the season for coordinator Kelvin Sheppard and the Lions’ defense, but O’Connell and the Vikings aren’t taking that group lightly.“(D.J.) Wonnum’s playing really well opposite Hutch (Aidan Hutchinson), and then the interior, it just feels like they’ve got some depth there,” O’Connell said. “They’ve got some guys that play really hard, and they’ve got twitch and size and strength. So you can tell it’s been a focal point for them, and it’s showing up on the tape with how they’re playing. Then obviously, they’ve still got (Jack) Campbell, (Derrick) Barnes, and the rest of their linebacking crew that’s been there a long time playing together. Getting (safety Brian) Branch back clearly elevates the group.”Heavyweight bout: Lions’ O vs. Vikings’ DThis is Godzilla vs. Kong. Ali vs. Frazier. Batman vs. the Joker. It doesn’t get much better than the Vikings’ No. 1 defense going against a Lions offense that ranks second in points and yards per game and third in EPA per play (except for maybe next week, when Josh Allen and the Bills come to Minneapolis).Under Ben Johnson, the Lions carved up Flores and the Vikings in 2023 and ’24, winning all four matchups and scoring at least 30 points every time. Last year, the Vikings got their revenge with two victories in which they sacked Goff ten times and forced seven turnovers (six of which came on Christmas Day at U.S. Bank Stadium). This year projects to be somewhere between those two extremes. The Vikings’ defense is clearly better than it’s ever been before. They’re led by a core group of smart, talented players that have been in Flores’ scheme for several years now. At the same time, the Lions’ offensive line is significantly healthier than it was last season.Goff is the NFL’s highest-graded passer against the blitz so far this season (per PFF), but the Vikings’ blitzes are a bit different than everyone else’s. Their 8-up looks where anyone could rush or drop into coverage are very tricky to assess and handle. Last season, the Vikings held Gibbs to 92 total yards on 31 touches in two games by consistently making him stay in and pass protect. We could potentially see the Lions bring backup running back Sione Vaki onto the field a bit more often for that reason.Jahmyr Gibbs on pass-blocking 15 times in first game against MIN last year: “That sh*t was crazy.”“I don’t remember most of it. My head was rocking, I ain’t gonna lie. But I’m up for the challenge, whatever that is.”“Vaki’s really good at it … and he takes it off of me.”— Will Burchfield (@burchie_kid) October 30, 2026
