Apparently, it caught some people inside North Carolina’s football program off guard, too.Two members of the UNC football staff, including a high-ranking staffer, reportedly said that they were not aware of any split between the head coach and his girlfriend despite a report claiming that the high-profile couple broke up nearly a year ago.The BreakupSources close to Hudson told TMZ Sports on Friday that Belichick, 74, and Hudson, 25, quietly ended their romance “late last year.” According to the report, they remain “committed to their business partnerships and remain close friends,” and Hudson has started seeing other people.The news quickly took over social media, with many in the sports world joking that “love is dead”.The two met on a flight in 2021 and went public with their relationship in 2024. Their relationship quickly became a major storyline, from Hudson interrupting Belichick’s CBS Sunday Morning interview to the balloon-filled press conference after his North Carolina debut, which many tied to her influence.Belichick has repeatedly defended Hudson, including on Good Morning America, and he dismissed claims this fall that she was trying to control the program.It has been a turbulent season in Chapel Hill. Longtime Belichick confidant Michael Lombardi resigned as general manager in September amid an internal investigation, and Belichick’s son, Steve, resigned as defensive coordinator two weeks later while on medical leave.‘Not Aware’But two people inside the UNC football office told USA Today’s Kevin Skiver and John Brice that they were not aware of a breakup. The two spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.Their surprise makes sense, considering that Hudson has remained a presence around the program. She has appeared on the sidelines at games this season, including North Carolina’s home opener against East Tennessee State and an Oct. 3 loss to Notre Dame.Hudson also attended a high school game with Belichick in late September. However, she has been much less visible this season than she was in Belichick’s first year at North Carolina, according to USA Today.The Tar Heels are 4-3 this season after going 4-8 in Belichick’s debut campaign.
