Texas Tech (8-1) | Last week: 1An old-fashioned Big 12 game broke out in Lubbock, but it was three sacks in a row by the Red Raiders defense to wrap up a 53-48 win over West Virginia. The CFP may not like Tech's schedule, but we like the wins.2. Texas (7-2) | Last week: 2Upon replay review, this Texas team showed a lot in a 34-20 win at Missouri. We're going to wait and see how the Longhorns fare in Baton Rouge. We've been fooled before.3. Houston (7-2) | Last week: 3The Cougars' signature SLAB car had some engine troubles, and Houston may have sputtered at times itself but Willie Fritz will take the 31-24 win over Cincinnati. Also, offered without comment: former UH coach Dana Holgorsen was fired at Nebraska where he was offensive coordinator.4. SMU (7-2) | Last week: 5Maybe we were too harsh on the Mustangs after their loss at Syracuse. They looked just fine in a 51-28 win over Virginia Tech but will still need help to get to ACC title game.5. North Texas (7-2) | Last week: 7It may be up to North Texas to make the American's bid for a CFP spot. The Mean Green are alone in first after beating Rice 52-23 and face UTSA next. They still would have to pass Boise State in the rankings.6. Baylor (6-3) | Last week: 9Who needs Lincoln Riley or Jeff Traylor when you have Joe Klanderman? The interim coach is 2-0 after a 42-31 win over Iowa State. It helps to have a healthy DJ Lagway, too. Oh yeah, the Bears are bowl eligible.7. Texas A&M (4-5) | Last week: 6The Aggies looked better at times but had to settle for too many field goals in a 17-9 loss at South Carolina. A&M will need to find two wins in final three games vs. Tennessee, at Oklahoma and vs. Texas to get a bowl bid.8. UTSA (7-2) | Last week: 4Giving up 60 points and losing to FAU is no way for UTSA to make a case for the CFP's spot for a Group of 6 team.9. TCU (4-5) | Last week: 8TCU was on the verge of upsetting No. 24 Arizona but couldn't handle an onside pooch kick that led to the winning field goal. "It's been a frustrating year," coach Sonny Dykes said after the 29-28 loss.10. Texas State (5-4) | Last week: 10The Bobcats fared much better in this week's Pac 12 After Dark. Of course, Oregon State isn't at quite the same level as Boise State.11. Rice (1-8) | Last week: 11The Owls have lost 11 in a row to FBS teams after falling at North Texas.12. UTEP (1-8) | Last week: 12UTEP had a chance in the fourth quarter but 17-14 was as close as the Miners could get in a loss to Hawaii.13. Sam Houston (1-8) | Last week: 13The Bearkats weren't any better after firing coach Phil Longo in a 47-14 loss to Jacksonville State.SubscribeThere’s more to Houston with the Chronicle.
