Texas A&M's No. 1-ranked 2027 recruiting class remains in a good spot despite the Aggies' on-field struggles, as four-star linebacker Aston Whiteside's flip to Miami was expected, while all of the program's six five-star commitments, including standout blue-chip linebacker Kaden Henderson, aren't expected to consider any other programs at this time. Third-year coach Mike Elko has done a solid job focusing on position needs, especially at wide receiver, landing commits from four-stars Jaden Upshaw and Eric McFarland; after landing current freshman running back KJ Edwards and Carsyn Baker, the Aggies still haven't landed a running back in the 2027 cycle. While it isn't exactly a "need," depth in the backfield is the reason A&M's rushing attack behind KJ Edwards serves as one of the team's lone bright spots amid the Aggies' 4-4 start, and according to AggieYell insider Joseph Hastings, current UTEP quarterback commit and three-star Johnny Hamilton is a name to watch at running back. After visiting Texas A&M during the Aggies' 41-0 win vs. The Citadel, Hamilton confirmed that only UTEP and Texas A&M are the teams he'll consider moving forward, and while he feels that quarterback is his more natural position, the standout athlete has already racked up 39 rushes for 397 yards, averaging 10.2 yards per carry, and producing five touchdowns this season. Speaking with Hastings, Hamilton said his growing relationship with Texas A&M running backs coach Trooper Taylor will determine whether he stays at UTEP or flips his commitment to the Aggies. “He’s a good coach. Love coach Troop,” Hamilton said. “He came down (in September) and talked with me. Had a good conversation with him. (The relationship has) gone pretty far. We still keep in touch, so it’s been going pretty good.”After losing five-star running back Landen Williams-Callis, who committed to Texas, the Aggies' attempt to flip four-star RB and Texas Tech commit SaRod Baker is less likely at this point.Contact/Follow us @AggiesWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Texas A&M news, notes and opinions.
