Key Takeaways

  • Tennessee wins major recruiting battle, lands CB Preston Glasco over Alabama and Georgia.
  • Preston Glasco was leaning towards Alabama.
  • Then Tennessee offered.

Tennessee made a late push for Preston Glasco. It paid off. The 2027 cornerback out of Loganville (Ga.) Grayson has committed to Josh Heupel and the Vols over Alabama and Georgia. Glasco, a former UConn commit, became one of the most closely watched defensive backs in the Southeast this fall.Alabama offered in September and quickly built momentum. Georgia remained a serious contender throughout the process. Tennessee entered the race last, but the Vols got the final visit when Glasco traveled to Knoxville for the Alabama game. That trip helped change the recruitment.“I don’t know if there were three or four things that really set Tennessee apart, as it was an extremely tough decision,” Glasco told Rivals. “They made a really big push down the stretch. I believe I can make a bigger impact earlier at Tennessee. Those things were factors.”Glasco had been evaluating Alabama and Georgia for months. He visited both programs multiple times this fall. The Crimson Tide made an aggressive move after offering, while the Bulldogs stayed in consistent contact.Tennessee had ground to make up. Heupel and his staff closed the gap quickly. The decision came down to the final conversations.“It really went down to the wire. Just a series of calls, conversations with the staff, and obviously the visit itself played a big role in the decision.”Glasco’s first trip to Knoxville came when Tennessee hosted Alabama. The Vols had an opportunity to show him their program in one of the biggest environments of the season.“It was a big impact, honestly, not just because they were playing Bama, but just getting in the atmosphere itself was very important to me,” Glasco said. “When you were there, you could tell the defense feeds off the fans, and the fans always bring the energy.”The experience stayed with him as he worked toward his decision.“Just being in the environment and soaking up as much as I could in person played a part in the decision as well.”Glasco is now eager to return to Neyland Stadium as a Tennessee player. The 6-foot-2 defender will be there in January. “I’m definitely excited about playing in Neyland,” Glasco said. “It seats 100,000, and just the thought of making plays with that many fans rooting for you is truly inspiring. On top of that, they say Neyland is the loudest stadium in the entire country.”The coaching staff also played a major role in Tennessee’s late surge. Heupel connected with Glasco shortly after the Vols extended their offer. Their relationship continued to grow as the recruitment intensified.“Coach Heup is a very down-to-earth guy. He’s been everything you could ask for out of a head coach since I first received an offer from them.”Glasco has developed an especially close relationship with Coach Jones too. “I talk to Coach Jones almost every day, and I love everything he’s about, even when you take football out of it,” Glasco said. “He’s a man of faith and is all about the development of his guys off the field, which naturally translates to on the field.”Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles brought another important element to Tennessee’s pitch.“Coach Knowles is a man of wisdom. Love everything he’s about. On top of that, he has a great background with winning a natty at Ohio State and also his track record for torching offenses.”Tennessee faced significant competition to land Glasco. Alabama had momentum. Georgia had longstanding relationships. Both programs made strong cases. But the Vols offered a combination Glasco couldn’t pass up: an opportunity to make an early impact, a defensive staff he trusts and an atmosphere he wants to play in.
