Schuylerville receives the Section 2 Class B championship plaque after defeating Mechanicville in double overtime on Saturday at Lansingburgh High School. (Kyle Adams/For the Times Union) TROY - As the final minutes ticked down in the second overtime period of the Section 2 Class B championship game on Saturday afternoon, the Schuylerville girls' soccer team finally broke through in the 107th minute. While No. 1 Mechanicville was looking to claim its third straight Class B title, the second-seeded Black Horses were set on redemption after falling in last year's championship game.On a corner kick taken by Schuylerville junior Juliet Letzring, and headed initially by senior Alexandra Hill, junior Vaughn Reilly finished the game-winning goal to give the Black Horses a 1-0 double-overtime victory and the girls soccer program's first Section 2 title in school history."Juliet served in a great ball, and someone got their head on it. It kind of just came to me, and I hoped for the best," Reilly said. "I'm so proud of everyone on the team. We've all worked so hard for this. … (The feeling) was 10 times better than I thought it would be. My whole team surrounding me, it was awesome.""I couldn't be more proud," said Schuylerville coach Paul Rogan. "They'll be laughing and fooling around before games, but they're (so confident) that they've got it, and it's been like that all year. They haven't had a bad half all season."Key momentWhile Reilly was able to finish off the corner kick in double overtime with the decisive goal, both teams had multiple chances to take home the win in regulation and the first overtime. Those thwarted attempts built up Reilly's dramatic clincher. In subsequent sequences in the first overtime period, Mechanicville's Gianna Pitts broke free for a one-on-one with Schuylerville's freshman goalkeeper Giuliana Hosgood - who made the save.As the Black Horses moved the ball up the field, Schuylerville nearly missed a chance on a cross sent into the box by Hill, which ended up wide left."Both teams had opportunities throughout regulation and in the overtime," said Mechanicville coach George Dudas. "We just weren't able to capitalize. Both keepers did a really good job. We always talk about crashing the net, and a couple of times we got there just a little bit late. Their defense did a good job, and so did ours. It all came down to (a corner kick), with four minutes to go, after more than 100 minutes.""They had the fight in them," said Rogan. "You could tell, both teams were gassed in the overtime. We just needed to have that one special effort to try to win a corner kick and see what we could do."Star of the gameWhether you asked Rogan or Dudas, for the game to reach the point it did, both teams' defenses proved to be spectacular. For Schuylerville, that meant holding down Mechanicville forwards Gianna Pitts and Tanner Eiseman."Both Tanner and Gianna, you have to have extra players around them," Rogan said of the Mechanicville standouts. "They're both very fantastic players and great athletes who will have great college careers. It was a matter of our team being focused all day and having bodies around them.""I just tried to stay as ready as I could, but it's definitely challenging to try to match up and take the ball from them," said Schuylerville's senior center back Ashlyn Abrami. "I think we're just really good at running through the ball and getting there before they do."We just kept trying our hardest and we never gave up. That's what we were saying the entire time, that we're playing until the last whistle."While Schuylerville controlled the majority of the possession, especially early in the game, it was senior goalkeeper Christina Bornt who held down the fort for Mechanicville."She was awesome," Dudas said of Bornt. "She did everything she could possibly do. I thought she was superb back there."Numbers to know11: Saves for Mechanicville goalkeeper Christina Bornt.4: In the four seasons since Dudas returned to the sidelines to lead Mechanicville, the program has played for a Class B title each season, winning championships in 2024 and 2025.1: Years playing soccer for freshman Giuliana Hosgood, who worked all throughout the offseason to become the starting goalkeeper for the Black Horses.
