The Minnesota Vikings have finally lost during the 2026 season. It took seven games, but it finally happened when they went on the road to Detroit to play the Lions. The fourth quarter had the most scoring of any quarter in the game, but it was the Lions who got the last laugh. The Vikings struggled on offense the first three quarters, led by Kyler Murray, who was struggling to hit receivers in stride or when they were open. Several of those misses could have helped extend drives and resulted in scoring some points. It will be a game that will give the Vikings a lot to think about and look over before they get ready for a big matchup with the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football. Before Week 9, we have some report card grades to go over from Week 8. Quarterback: D-Kyler Murray created a lot of questions about the quarterback position for the Vikings after his play in Week 8. He was missing throws, he couldn't extend plays effectively, and the end result continues to be that this offense is flat through eight weeks of the season. Running Backs: BBoth Jordan Mason and Aaron Jones made some splash plays in Week 8. Mason specifically looked explosive on his one big run, but the group was far from perfect. Wide Receivers and Tight Ends: IncompleteThe play of Kyler Murray has made this group hard to examine. T.J. Hockenson continues to play well with him, but since Week 1, Justin Jefferson has struggled. Not to mention, Jordan Addison and Jauan Jennings continue to be ignored in this offense with his quarterback play. Offensive Line: B+The offensive line did well enough against the Lions' talented defensive line. They created some running lanes, got pushback, and were able to give the offense chances. Just as they have all season long, the Vikings couldn't capitalize, but that isn't the line's fault. Defensive Line: CThe Vikings' defensive line did not make their usual impact. They got after Jared Goff some, but they remain unable to solve the puzzle that is Jahmyr Gibbs and the Lions' rushing attack. They have top get that fixed between now and their next matchup later in the season. Linebackers: C+After the Vikings' linebackers excelled all season long, especially in Week 7, we had high expectations. They did not meet the moment to stop the run game for the Vikings as they ran for 230 total yards. Andrewe Van Ginkel got 2.5 sacks, which helped their grade but not enough to make it respectable. Secondary: A-Jared Goff and the Lions' passing attack were held in check for most of the game. Jameson Williams was able to get some chunk plays, but they held Amon-Ra St. Brown in check, which helped keep this game close. James Pierre made plays; the safeties did their part; it was a rare gam where the defense wasn't able to keep the opposing offense in check.
