Matt Rhule’s eldest daughter was walking at Memorial Stadium on Saturday night following the Cornhuskers’ 17-10 loss to Washington when a Nebraska fan walked up to her. “F-U and F your dad,” Rhule said the man told his daughter. While Rhule confirmed on Monday that he isn’t leaving his post in Lincoln, he did say that that kind of behavior will drive him out of the sport completely if it keeps happening. Harassing his family, he said, is where he draws the line. “I’m not going to keep coaching if it means my kids grow up screwed up,” Rhule said, via The Athletic. “You know, I’m not going to [keep] coaching and see my daughter shook.”Rhule is in his fourth season with the Cornhuskers this fall. He holds a 44-22 overall record at Nebraska, and he’s never won more than seven games in a single season. The Huskers have now lost three straight, and sit at 5-3 on the season entering this weekend’s matchup at Illinois. They still have to go up against No. 11 Ohio State and No. 21 Iowa before the season ends, too.Rhule still has six years left on his contract with Nebraska, too, and would be owed nearly $48 million should the university opt to fire him before the end of the year. Rule isn’t necessarily considered to be on the hot seat, and that is a very large buyout. It’s easy to understand why Nebraska fans may be frustrated with Rhule. The Cornhuskers led in the fourth quarter before allowing Washington to mount a long game-winning drive in the final minutes. That led to plenty of fans booing and things being launched down onto the field from the stands. Last time I was here(1998) Nebraska fans could not have been friendlier. I’m not leaving. I’m not quitting. I’m fighting for those people. For the people that are listening to the game while they’re on a combine. We are going to fight for those people.“But please don’t ever question how hard these kids are working or how hard these coaches are working or how hard I’m working.”As for his family, Rhule said they are all still on board, too. Rhule’s oldest son, Bryant, is a college student at Nebraska and has done work with the football team. Rhule’s 10-year-old daughter texted him in the wake of the loss.“She was like: ‘Dad, I love Nebraska. I love living in Nebraska. I love Nebraska football. I love the players. I’m tough. This is just teaching me life lessons. Please don’t quit,’” he said.
