Martin O’Neill makes honest Celtic admission over Sam Johnstone and Viljami SinisaloCeltic manager Martin O’Neill has admitted it could take several weeks before he settles on his first-choice goalkeeper for the remainder of the season. The Hoops boss has continued to rotate between Sam Johnstone and Viljami Sinisalo, with neither establishing themselves as the undisputed number one at Parkhead.Johnstone arrived on loan from Wolves during the summer to provide competition for Sinisalo, who enjoyed an extended run in the side last season following Kasper Schmeichel’s injury. Both goalkeepers have been handed opportunities this term, although O’Neill has yet to make a definitive decision on who will retain the gloves.Johnstone was selected for Wednesday night’s draw against Dundee United, with the Celtic manager satisfied by the 33-year-old’s performance.O’Neill said: “Sam, yeah, I thought he did fine, really fine in the game. So it’ll take us a few weeks before we find out who will stay in goal for hopefully the rest of the season.”Celtic’s defensive vulnerabilities were once again exposed against Jim Goodwin’s side, conceding twice in three minutes as they surrendered their lead. The Scottish champions have now managed just one clean sheet in their previous eight matches, with O’Neill acknowledging that improvements are required. He admitted: “I think naturally we can do better. I think that we could have done better for the goals.“But every single goal that’s conceded, every manager and every player on the team that’s conceded will say that he could have done better.”O’Neill added: “Yeah, I think, I think sometimes the lack of control comes from, you know, losing possession quite easily. Sometimes the move breaks down. Next thing you know that we’re stranded because we are essentially at Celtic Park controlling the game, controlling it.“And so we’ve pressed a lot of players forward, centre halves moving into midfield and beyond. Next thing you know, if it breaks down there is danger. So that’s something that we have to try and eliminate.”HAVE YOUR SAY – Join the Celtic conversation in our comments section below…Celtic in the Fifties by Matt Corr, in two volumes, both published on 4th September 2026 by Celtic Star Books.
