The Vikings have some of the best offensive skill players in the NFL and one of the league’s worst offenses. The result is a 6-1 football team with a brewing quarterback controversy, as Kyler Murray’s inconsistent play led to Justin Jefferson’s frustration boiling over on the sideline and in the locker room, where he declined to talk to reporters following Minnesota’s 19-15 loss in Detroit on Sunday. What’s stopping Murray — he completed 17 of 29 passes for 210 yards, two touchdowns and one interception — from leading the Vikings to bigger performances on offense?“I definitely gotta go back and look at it. From my vantage point, or knowing the coverage on a play, you’re thinking maybe there’s going to be some opportunities. But I thought he made some big-time throws,” O’Connell said. “I just thought, in general, there were some positives, but there’s still some plays we’re leaving out there that will help with the overall rhythm of the game. We gotta continue to find the best way to get him comfortable, get him feeling like he can consistently just throw completions.”Two plays that stick out from the Vikings’ first loss were an overthrow of Justin Jefferson on a third down in the second quarter, followed by another overthrown ball to Jefferson that was intercepted in the second quarter. “The ball was going to [Jefferson]. Obviously sailed on me,” Murray said. “That’s on me.” A lot is on Murray, who has led a Vikings offense that has failed to score a touchdown in 13 of 20 quarters since he returned from a concussion in Week 3 against Tampa Bay. Murray has yet to pass for more than 247 yards in a game, and he’s not getting nearly enough out of Jefferson and Jordan Addison. O’Connell doesn’t seem to have an answer after weeks of claiming the offense is close to finding a groove. “It’s going back through it, and any of the inconsistencies really dive into the why. I don’t necessarily believe it’s going to be one tell-all thing. I think it’s how we continue to put together the plans, where he’s most comfortable in his alignment, and then marrying up the offense from that,” O’Connell said Sunday. “We like the idea of getting him on the perimeter. We like the idea of activating him a little bit in the run game, which we saw a little bit today. I don’t necessarily think right now it’s one particular thing. I’m very fortunate to have an extra day to go to work on that. We’re just looking for consistent. It doesn’t need to be much more than guys just doing their jobs. Pitching and catching… one or two more plays could change the whole dynamic of one of those sequences that we needed to make a play.”At 6-1, the Vikings are afforded more patience with the offensive issues. But this is now a six-game issue dating back to the 39-point explosion in the season opener against Green Bay. And every loss is critical in the loaded NFC North: the Lions and Bears are 5-2 and the Packers are 5-3. With games against the Bills (6-1), Packers and 49ers (6-1) in the next three weeks, they cannot afford to have the offense cost them more games. The margin for error will be too thin. Does anyone have answers?“A lot of reasons. Penalties. Too many misses. I don’t know the statistics on us running the ball today or me in the air, but just too much inconsistency,” Murray said. “Whether it’s me or somebody else, there’s too many ‘my bads,’ and it’s not good enough, and it got us beat today,” he added. There is zero evidence to suggest O’Connell or Murray has figured out how to fix the offense. It’s broken, and words are meaningless without actions on the field supporting the confidence. “It is frustrating. But at the end of the day, we’re 6-0 before coming into this game, and we’re not going to sit here and dwell on the what-ifs and the negatives and stuff like that, because at the end of the day it’s the NFL and it’s hard to win,” Murray said. “We’re going to keep grinding. That’s just who we are. Like I said, the confidence in the group has not wavered once, and it won’t. We lost today, but I know we’ll be back better because of it. It’s just a little adversity. I know the guys in that locker room are built the right way, and the standard that we have in there, it’ll show.”If not, he’s in danger, if he’s not already, of losing his job.
