Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart had good reason to be pleased after Saturday’s result in Atlanta. His No. 3 Bulldogs beat No. 17 Florida 27-8 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium to improve to 7-1. Yet attention has since turned to a bigger issue in college football. Asked about the physical toll of this SEC season, Smart shared a blunt take that has fans talking online.Kirby Smart questions rise in SEC injuriesSEC Mike (@MichaelWBratton) posted a video of Smart on Nov. 1, the day after Georgia beat Florida. In the clip, Smart answered a question about the SEC’s injury carnage this season while standing at the podium in a red Georgia cap. The post featured three of his lines on injuries, player hunger and player pay.“Yeah, it does seem different. I’ve asked several coaches about it and you know, we all have speculation. I don’t want to get judgment on on you know, what it is. I mean, everybody’s practicing less but everybody’s getting injured more. And it doesn’t make sense. It doesn’t add up because we’re not at the point of,” Kirby Smart said.“You know, the ninth game yet. Nobody’s played any more than they only would have right now. Um, so I don’t I don’t have a good answer for that. Uh, I do think that, you know, there was a big decision made when they did the rosters to what they did their rosters to and we debated with a lot of uh, higher up people. Um, to to to come to the roster limitations we came to,” Smart continued.Jul 21, 2026; Tampa, FL, USA; Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart speaks to the press during SEC Football Kickoff Media Day at the Tampa Marriott. I think about the teams we had in 21 and 22, how physical they were and how they practiced. And I’m like we can’t even get close to that now.”The remarks stand out because lighter practice schedules are often meant to protect players. He then compared today’s players with his own past earnings.“Is it I don’t know. I mean, is is is it different culture that that that guys don’t want to as much? I don’t know because the there were definitely hungry because there was a motivation to make it and you know, a lot of these guys, honestly, they they made more than I made till I was 40. I mean, so uh it’s just a different day and age,” Smart added.Kirby Smart asked about SEC carnage this season“Everybody is practicing less, but everyone is getting injured more, it doesn’t make sense.”“(Players) were definitely hungrier (in the past).”“A lot of these guys, honestly, make more than I made until I was 40.” https://t.co/RbGlDciwgM— SEC Mike (@MichaelWBratton) November 1, 2026The topic hits close to home in Athens. Days after the Auburn loss on Oct. 17, Smart said Georgia was more beat up than in past years, even though practices were lighter. He later said his roster has less depth than ever. Even with that depth worry, Georgia outrushed Florida 217 yards to 48 on Saturday.Smart has also been vocal about another SEC storyline this month.Smart still waiting for the Cignetti effect in the SECInjuries are not the only league topic Smart has tackled lately. Ahead of Auburn week, reporters asked him about the “Cignetti Effect,” a nod to Indiana’s rise under Curt Cignetti. Indiana won last season’s national title. Georgia was 6-0 and ranked No. 1 at the time after a 20-17 win at Alabama.Smart replied bluntly, “I’m still waiting for the first ‘Curt Cignetti effect’ in the SEC.” He called weekly SEC play a grind and said quarterback play drives success. He also credited Cignetti for his work with quarterbacks, as covered in Smart’s comments on the Cignetti effect.Cignetti has taken his own subtle shot at the SEC while praising the Big Ten.No. 3 Georgia (7-1, 5-1 SEC) travels to Oxford to face Ole Miss on Saturday, Nov. 7. The Rebels, led by Pete Golding, beat the Bulldogs 39-34 in last season’s Sugar Bowl.
