  • Indianapolis Jacksonville Jaguarscoach Liam Coen held a virtual news conference with the media on Nov.

Jacksonville Jaguarscoach Liam Coen held a virtual news conference with the media on Nov. 2 to discuss the team's 42-7 victory over the Indianapolis Colts the day before, and the short work week the Jags face before going to Baltimore on Nov. 5 to play the Ravens (8:15 p.m., Prime). The Jaguars are 5-2 and lead the AFC South by three games. They are also entering a 10-week period in which they are at home only three times. They don't return home until Nov. 29 vs. Tennessee.Liam Coen on putting more on QB Trevor Lawrence's plate"We wouldn't ask him to do those things if we didn't believe he was capable mentally. And then, as you go, things get easier. Like some parts of the game get easier that you start to anticipate and understand. When you truly understand the why behind run cans [changing the play] or pass protection, then you can start to see it faster on the grass. You can see it before it starts to develop and occur."Liam Coen on season-ending injuries to NT DaVon Hamilton and S Eric Murray"Disappointing for sure … for both of those guys. On a short week, we're going to have those guys step up to play. [Rookie nose tackle Albert] Regis has gotten better and better over the last few weeks, specifically giving us fits on the show team. He has made our offensive line better over the last few weeks on the show team, and now is going to be a great opportunity for him to step up and give us some quality snaps. Dickey's [DT Matt Dickerson] been playing well. Ruke's [NT Ruke Orhorhoro] been playing well. Arik [DT Armstead] had a really good game yesterday and those guys are going to have to play meaningful snaps for us and help us stop a Derrick Henry."Liam Coen on whether S Antonio Johnson can return"We'll see … that's that one. It's going to be harder. We'll be able to do a little bit more [Tuesday] than we'll be able to do today on the grass. When we actually jog around and move around more out on the grass, hopefully we'll have a better feel for that [Tuesday]."Liam Coen on WR Brian Thomas Jr."He's a young dude but he's very mature. He's not an immature guy that you're emotional and gets too high and too low. He's going to continue to come out and do a job. I think I said at some point last week that he was going to make plays for us in this game, and we all had belief that was going to happen, and we're going to continue to believe that."We're going to continue to work with him and to try to get the most out of every player, but especially BT. I have been impressed with the way that he's able to block out the noise and continue to be integrated with everybody. I was proud, I was very happy for him. To see him make that play on the first drive of the game on a critical third-and-goal to go."Liam Coen on backups playing well vs. Colts"It showed up on Sunday in a number of ways. [LB] Branson Combs had a heck of a game on [special] teams and on defense. S Rayuan Lane arguably played one of his best games as a Jaguar. Take away even the interception pick-six… was a phenomenal play and all … but his communication throughout the game, getting us helping with checks, getting us in and out of things. He almost had a strip sack. S Jalen Husky getting in later in the game and having a sack … anytime you can get young players NFL experience, it's just so valuable. It's such a long season, and you have these injuries pop up whether it's going to happen now or right in week 12."Liam Coen on Travis Hunter returning punts"Obviously want to try to continue to find ways to get Travis the ball in his hands, and that's something we're going to continue to work through and continue to look at and see if there's ways to create some more explosive plays. That's why we did that … to try to mix it up a little bit."This article originally appeared on Florida Times-Union: Jacksonville Jaguars coach Liam Coen on injuries, Trevor Lawrence
