He was not specific about what had happened to Ham.“Everybody knows that this was a gut-wrenching day for Penn State football with Jack Ham,” Nittany Lions coach Matt Campbell said after the 28-25 win over Washington. “Obviously it was a really tough situation as we got off the buses here.”The 77-year-old Ham has teamed with play-by-play man Steve Jones for more than 25 years.“We should all know about Steve Jones and the heroic effort that he did for somebody he loves dearly,” Campbell said. “If it’s not for Steve and what he did, I don’t know if we would have had as good a news as we have now.”Ham played linebacker at Penn State from 1968-70 and was later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. He went on to play 12 seasons for the Pittsburgh Steelers and was later inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.“I want to start with prayers for the Ham family and for the Penn State team,” Washington coach Jedd Fisch said in his opening remarks after the game. “I heard just now there was a medical emergency. I heard our medical team was phenomenal and acted quickly.”Campbell said he told the Penn State players about Ham’s emergency before they took the field at Husky Stadium for the game.“I was really proud of our football team,” Campbell said. “The courage of our kids to play knowing what Jack Ham means to Penn State football, how that guy played the game, how that guy to this day still serves our football program. It was awesome to be able to win the game for him and his family.“Our thoughts and prayers will continue to be with him for a full recovery.”
