BLOOMINGTON — For the first time this season, Indiana football starting quarterback Josh Hoover found himself listed on the team's availability report. Hoover is listed as probable for the No. 4 Hoosiers (7-1, 4-1 Big Ten) ahead of a matchup against Minnesota. The designation isn't totally unexpected with IU coach Curt Cignetti telling reporters Hoover wasn't at 100% after a 13-6 overtime win over Michigan. The coaching staff considered replacing him with backup QB Grant Wilson with Hoover only attempting two passes after halftime. The injury stems from the awkward hit he took to his throwing arm in the Ohio State game. On Monday, Cignetti didn't sound worried about Hoover having to sit out. The fifth-year quarterback hasn't missed a start due to injury in his college career. "I expect him to be fine and better this week," Cignetti said.More: Indiana football QB Josh Hoover’s ‘dog mentality’ gives Hoosiers a winning edgeWhile Hoover was limited in the second half against Michigan, the toughness he displayed making the key plays in overtime to help IU pull out a victory impressed his teammates. Hoover has thrown for 1,741 yards with 18 touchdowns and an interception this season. He has a 170.9 passer rating that ranks No. 12 among all FBS quarterbacks.“It's the dog mentality,” Indiana center Bray Lynch said on Tuesday night. “And if you asked me if he were to get hurt before the season started and played, I would have told you, 'Hell yeah, he would have.' He's a dog like that.”Hoover isn't alone on the injury report.Indiana listed wide receiver Davion Chandler and defensive end Kellan Wyatt as out and safety Quan Sanks as questionable. Wyatt, one of the many student-athletes fighting the NCAA's eligibility rules in court, suffered a lower body injury against Michigan. Thanks to his eligibility situation, he spent much of the offseason rehabbing the season-ending knee injury he suffered in 2025 on his own. He climbed up the depth chart in recent weeks to become the first defensive end off the bench behind Tobi Osunsanmi and Stephen Daley. He made the most of the opportunities with seven quarterback pressures over IU's last three games. Indiana still has plenty of depth at the position with Josh Burnham and Daniel Ndukwe likely in line to get more snaps. At receiver, Chandler has been in the mix alongside Tyler Morris and Shazz Preston as Indiana's third receiver. He's been the most productive of the group — he has 11 catches for 131 yards for four touchdowns — but Cignetti said that no one has been consistent enough in the spot. "Still kind of waiting for one guy to separate themselves," Cignetti said. Michael Niziolek is the Indiana beat reporter for The Bloomington Herald-Times.
