Florida State baseball welcomed back a stacked cast of alumni for the program's annual Garnet and Gold scrimmage to close out the fall ball slate at Dick Howser Stadium.Cal Raleigh, Cam Smith, Cole Sands, CJ Van Eyk, Jamie Arnold and James Tibbs III lined the dugout and took pictures with fans while the current crop of Seminole players played a seven-inning scrimmage. The alumni took time to speak with players and did a few in-game interviews. The game itself was highlighted by multiple home runs. Jace Estes hit one towards the circus in right field, a no-doubt shot for the Wakulla Christian product. "Over the course of the last couple of weeks, we brought these guys in to talk some development stuff, to talk about swing decisions, to talk about leveraging counts, and Jace got a pitch to hit, stayed behind it, put a good swing on," FSU assistant Brad Vanderglas said postgame. "He had a really nice night." John Stuetzer got in on the action with a two-run home run of his own.The highlight of the game, however, came from Genson Veras, who hit a ball well over the left field scoreboard and into the parking lot of the stadium in the sixth inning to put the Gold team ahead 9-4, which was the final score through seven innings."First pitch got a little bit too antsy. I just calmed myself down and just had fun out there. I knew it off the bat," Veras said after the game. "My power is something that I was blessed with, and I'm happy for it to get put to good use this year."The home run derby counted toward the final score, with home runs to center field worth three points, and those to the corner worth a single point. Despite plenty of power at the plate, only a handful of home runs were hit, with Ty Peeples and Marvin Montenegro hitting a pair each to make the final score 11-6 in favor of the Gold roster and setting off fireworks over Howser. It's been a long fall. Not to say you ever want this stuff to get monotonous because there's always stuff to work on, but when you're talking about these dudes kind of jarring at each other, they've been going at it," Vanderglas said. "They've got self-made scouting reports on one another. To dial it up, it kind of just turns it up a notch, and it makes it feel like postseason baseball. It's just the perfect way to cap the fall."The Seminoles will begin the 2027 regular season on Feb. 19 against USC Upstate at Dick Howser Stadium.Liam Rooney covers Florida State athletics for the Tallahassee Democrat.
