Returning to Portland with newfound perspective, Lillard reveals how the relentless intensity of playing alongside a Tier-1 superstar sets a daunting performance benchmark for the Blazers' developing roster.

  • Damian Lillard's Giannis Praise Highlights a Bigger Challenge for Blazers' New Core.
  • CJ McCollum and LaMarcus Al

Damian Lillard finally got what he'd spent years searching for when he left Portland in 2023: an opportunity to pursue a championship alongside another legitimate superstar. Two seasons later, he returned without a ring. But his experience playing alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo clearly left an impression. Now back with the Portland Trail Blazers, Lillard's latest comments about his former teammate offer an interesting perspective on what Portland's new-look core could accomplish ... and the expectations that come with it.During a recent interview with ESPN's Chiney Ogwumike, Lillard reflected on his two seasons in Milwaukee, describing the opportunity to play alongside Antetokounmpo as a luxury he'd never previously experienced. And while Giannis' individual accomplishments speak for themselves, what impressed Lillard most went beyond the stat sheet. He praised Antetokounmpo's competitive intensity, his commitment to performing and the pride he took in showing up every night.Coming from someone who spent 11 seasons carrying the weight of an entire franchise, that's a meaningful compliment.Lillard had plenty of talented teammates during his first stint in Portland. CJ McCollum and LaMarcus Aldridge immediately come to mind. But playing alongside a two-time MVP who approached his responsibilities with a similar mentality was an entirely different experience. It's also something Lillard has acknowledged before. In July 2025, he explained how Giannis could carry Milwaukee to victory on nights when Lillard wasn't at his best offensively. That kind of security hadn't been a regular feature of his career. And for a brief stretch, the partnership delivered.Milwaukee defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder 97-81 in December 2024 to capture the NBA Cup, with Antetokounmpo recording 26 points, 19 rebounds and 10 assists. Lillard contributed another 23 points. It looked like a preview of what the Bucks might accomplish in the postseason.Unfortunately, that opportunity never materialized.Giannis missed Milwaukee's entire first-round series against Indiana in 2024, while Lillard suffered a torn Achilles during another first-round matchup with the Pacers the following year. Two seasons together ... two first-round exits.Still, Lillard doesn't appear interested in treating the experience as a failure. He valued his time with the organization, developed relationships he maintains today and appreciated the opportunity to compete alongside one of basketball's best players. He also admitted Milwaukee never felt like home.Three years after leaving Portland to pursue a championship, Lillard is back where he built his legacy — and the supporting cast looks considerably different.Ja Morant and Deni Avdija give the Blazers two established offensive threats, while Jrue Holiday brings championship experience to a roster that finished 42-40 and reached the playoffs last season. There's some irony in Holiday's presence, too.He was the player Milwaukee originally sent to Portland in the deal that brought Lillard to the Bucks. After a subsequent trade to Boston and another championship, Holiday eventually found his way back to the Blazers. Now they're teammates.Of course, nobody should expect Morant or Avdija to suddenly become Antetokounmpo. There aren't many players in basketball history who could reasonably meet that expectation. But Lillard's comments weren't exclusively about talent. They were about trusting another player to approach winning with the same seriousness he did.And that's a standard Portland's current roster has the opportunity to establish. The Blazers have already demonstrated they can compete for a playoff spot. Taking another step forward will require their established stars and younger contributors to consistently embrace the responsibilities that come with higher expectations.Lillard has experienced both sides of that equation. He spent more than a decade as Portland's unquestioned centerpiece, then discovered what it felt like to share those responsibilities with a generational talent. Even that wasn't enough to guarantee postseason success. Now he's 36, coming off a significant injury and surrounded by a collection of players with their own opportunities to help define this franchise's future. There's no telling how many more chances he'll have to chase the championship that's eluded him throughout his career.Portland has already given Lillard something Milwaukee couldn't — the opportunity to finish what he started in the city he considers home. But the competitive standard he admired in Giannis can't come from Lillard alone. If the Blazers want this reunion to become something more than another memorable chapter in franchise history, their current core will have to prove it can carry that responsibility alongside him.And unlike the first time Lillard was in Portland, the franchise doesn't have another decade to figure it out.
