JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Colts head coach Shane Steichen continues to strike the same tone on questions about his job security, although he did acknowledge that he’s not doing a good enough job for a team that is spiraling.“I’m focused on getting better,” Steichen said. “That’s what I’m focused on. Nothing else.”Indianapolis lost 42-7 in an uncompetitive game against Jacksonville on Sunday.“Clearly, I’ve got to do a better job, plain and simple,” Steichen said. “I’ve got to a do a better job, because that wasn’t it today.”Indianapolis looked uninspired and often looked uninterested, and Steichen acknowledged the effort was not there.“It wasn’t good enough,” Steichen said. “Flat-out not good enough. … The effort and the energy has to be there.”Steichen is 27-32 in three-plus seasons as the Colts head coach. And although offensive acumen has generally kept Indianapolis in contention through his first three seasons, Steichen’s decision-making and inability to develop Anthony Richardson at quarterback has ultimately been his weakest point.Indianapolis hired Steichen, in part, because of his ability to develop Chargers’ quarterback Justin Herbert and Eagles starter Jalen Hurts, then drafted Richardson with the No. 4 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.Steichen believed deeply that Richardson needed to play right away to develop, but Richardson struggled instead, dealing with injury, inaccuracy and immaturity in his first two seasons, prompting Indianapolis to sign Daniel Jones to compete with Richardson.A shocking season from Jones got the Colts off to an 8-2 start in 2025, convincing both Steichen and team owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon to build the 2026 season around Jones, but Jones has instead faltered coming off a torn right Achilles tendon.Steichen has steadfastly stood behind Jones this season, reluctant to pull him as a starter despite Jones’ turning in one of the worst seasons of his career. Indianapolis has cratered offensively as a result, to the point that the Colts have scored just 17 combined points against the Vikings and Jaguars the last two weeks.Irsay-Gordon has already made one big decision this season, firing general manager Chris Ballard after a devastating loss to Tennessee. The Colts’ owner could decided to make the same decision on Steichen two weeks later, ending any speculation for the team.Joel A.
