Oct. 30—CLEMSON — Trick or treat, Tigers fans. Which will it be this weekend?Clemson football is traveling to Tallahassee, Fla., for a Halloween night matchup with Florida State. Both the Tigers (4-3, 2-2 ACC) and the Seminoles (3-4, 1-3 ACC) have had spooky seasons with some frightening losses. The two coaches leading the opposing teams, Dabo Swinney and Mike Norvell, have had their futures openly discussed for some time now.A win, for either team, would be quite the treat. A loss would have fans feeling tricked after promises of improvement from Swinney following a 7-6 record in 2025 — or vows of change from Florida State's administration, which fired its athletic director last month but are reportedly considering keeping Norvell around despite his firing looking like a foregone conclusion in the preseason.Only one program will be in a celebratory mood for the holiday after Saturday night.Key playersClemsonRB Gideon Davidson: Swinney said it best when he described sophomore running back Gideon Davidson's game as "feast or famine." At his best, the first-year starter is extremely productive, rushing for 150-plus yards and finding the end zone twice against Cal. At his worst, which Swinney said happened against Virginia Tech, he breaks a 26-yard run in the third quarter and only touches the ball one more time because he's struggling in pass protection. Swinney has been thought to use media availabilities to subtly message his players, but directly calling Davidson out was a step further. It'll be key for Davidson to come out motivated and ready to respond against the nation's 112th-ranked rushing defense.DB Elliott Washington II: Washington got off to a hot start in 2026, grabbing three interceptions in two weeks against North Carolina and Cal back in September. Since then he's been quiet. This weekend could be his chance to show off those ball-hawking skills once again. FSU quarterback Ashton Daniels is tied for second in the country with eight interceptions thrown this year and is often a reckless decision-maker. Washington can and should be able to punish that, similar to how he punished UNC's Billy Edwards Jr. and Cal's Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele.Florida StateQB Ashton Daniels: Daniels turns the ball over a lot, sure, but make no mistake: He's a very dangerous QB and is particularly effective at facilitating the run game. He's rushed for nearly as many touchdowns (11) as he's thrown (12). He'll be alone on the ground this weekend with starting RB Ousmane Kromah out for the year, but Daniels is still a threat on the run by himself.WR Duce Robinson: Without Kromah, expect FSU to lean a little more into its passing game and for Robinson to be involved as a result. He's an explosive playmaker, recording 407 yards and four touchdowns on 22 catches this season. He broke off a 76-yard score against No. 1 Miami to force overtime and nearly brought in the game-winning catch against the Hurricanes before officials overturned the play.Key matchupFor the second straight week, it's Clemson's receivers vs. the opposing secondary. It's been a rough go for the Tigers wideouts, which first caught flak after they weren't able to score a passing touchdown against Charleston Southern — T.J. Moore received the worst of it after a handful of drops.Virginia Tech was supposed to be a bounce-back game. The Hokies entered Death Valley with the nation's 95th pass defense. They left with a 20-16 win and held Clemson's passing attack to 153 yards and zero touchdowns. So not an encouraging few weeks for Moore, Bryant Wesco Jr. and company. But there's good news: FSU has the 124th-ranked passing defense. Clemson won't face another pass defense as lenient and unproductive this season as the one it will face this weekend. The Tigers can still lean on Davidson and maybe even should, but the passing game has to put something, anything good on tape against the 'Noles.Key storylineThe biggest storyline of the weekend will come back to Swinney, Norvell and the hot seat. It's too enticing of a narrative for national outlets to not pick up on:Two historic ACC programs that, along with Miami and North Carolina, bring in more revenue for the conference than the other 14 programs. And yet, the two are currently being outdone on the field by the likes of Wake Forest and SMU, just to name a few.Swinney once built Clemson into a national power, the only program that could rival Nick Saban's Alabama year after year. Things seem to have strayed far from their peak as Swinney insists on doing things the Clemson way and outsiders criticize him for not getting with the times.Norvell has built up much less goodwill than Swinney — outside of a 23-4 run from 2022-2023 — but is somehow on Year 7 of his tenure at FSU. He would've been most folks' No. 1 pick for the hottest seat in football this preseason, but his approximate $50 million buyout and no permanent AD to lead the search for a new coach makes him tough to fire. There's a $57 million buyout for Swinney, which certainly doesn't make the thought of moving on from your program's best-ever coach any easier to stomach.Even though hot seat talks will be prevalent this weekend, don't be surprised if both coaches are still around in 2027.Final prediction: Clemson 17, Florida State 16Maybe not the sweetest treat, but a win is a treat nonetheless.Clemson continues to struggle on offense and is actually outgained by the Seminoles, but the Tigers do a better job of finishing drives.Freshman QB Tait Reynolds breaks his passing touchdown slump and finds the end zone through the air for the first time in over a month. Davidson bounces back and scores once. Clemson kicker and leading scorer Nolan Hauser has his name called for a field goal try just once during the win.FSU, meanwhile, struggles and turns the ball over three times during the game. Daniels still breaks off an explosive touchdown run, but that's about it for the offense. With one drive left, Daniels has one more drive to win the game down 17-13 and, you guessed it, throws a pick to Washington.Clemson heads home with the win and quiets the noise ever so slightly and temporarily, while outrage in Tallahassee jolts up once again.Game dayWhat: Clemson (4-3, 2-2 ACC) at Florida State (3-4, 1-3)When: Saturday, 7 p.m.Where: Doak S.
