The Denver Broncos got some tough news when it comes to pass catchers going into Sunday’s key game against the Kansas City Chiefs, with running back RJ Harvey placed on injured reserve and Jaylen Waddle listed as questionable, according to a report from Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. Harvey’s injury is recent, as he sustained a knee injury during practice this week, according to Smith via Ian Rapaport. His absence will be a for a minimum of four games, with Smith listing them as the Chiefs game, Week 9 against the Panthers, the Week 10 bye, Week 11 against the Raiders and Week 12 against the Steelers. He will be eligible to return in Week 13, December 6 against the Dolphins. The running back hasn’t been very effective running between the tackles, but he is a key part of Denver’s passing game, which is struggling right now. The Broncos often use Harvey as a de facto receiver, and he has the skill set to excel in that role. His current stat line includes 25 catches for 217 yards this season. He also has 24 carries for 87 yards. Running back Cody Schrader was elevated from the practice squad for Sunday’s Chiefs game, and the Broncos also elevated guard Gavin Ortega while signing safety Taylor Rapp to the active roster from the practice squad. Other players were listed as questionable along with Waddle, including defensive tackle Zach Allen (hamstring), cornerback Pat Surtain II (ankle) and safety Brandon Jones (hamstring), but all four players practiced on a limited basis, according to Jeff Legwold of ESPN. The Broncos will also be facing receiver Rashee Rice, as he’s back for Kansas City after missing time with a hamstring injury. They may get some opportunities in the passing game, though, as Chiefs cornerbacks Mansoor Delane and L’Jarious Sneed will both be out with injuries. The biggest impact of the Harvey move is that it could motivate Denver to get a running back at the deadline, with Jonathan Taylor of the Indianapolis Colts being the big name being floated in rumors. The Broncos are now down to J.K. Dobbins and rookie Jonah Coleman at the position, so it would be surprising if Denver didn’t at least make a depth move. The last-minute flurry of injuries could cause some strategic moves as well, with Denver and Kansas City currently battling for the lead in the AFC West.
