A scary moment occurred during the Iowa high school football state quarterfinal between Ankeny and Iowa City Liberty on Nov. 6.Late in the fourth quarter, Ankeny defensive ends coach Greg Schoon collapsed on the Hawks' sideline. Several people in attendance, including police, athletic trainers from both teams and even fans who work in the medical field, came down to the field to assist with CPR and the use of a defibrillator until an ambulance arrived to take Schoon to a hospital. After a delay, the game continued and the Hawks advanced to the state semifinals with a 51-29 win over Liberty.Ankeny head coach Jeff Bauer told the Des Moines Register on Nov. 7 that he visited Schoon in the hospital following the game. Bauer said Schoon was "talking like normal coach Schoon" as the hospital ran tests. It was unclear what caused Schoon to collapse and he will remain in the hospital at least until Monday, Bauer said.Bauer said the quick response from all who assisted was "amazing.""We all said later, 'God, it's a blessing it happened there,'" Bauer said. "There's so many people there to help save you and they all went to action in no time."Bauer said Ankeny players planned to visit Schoon in the hospital over the weekend. Ankeny will face Johnston on Nov. 13 at the UNI-Dome for a spot in the state finals as the program hopes for a speedy recovery for their beloved coach.Eli McKown covers high school sports and wrestling for the Des Moines Register.
